Obituaries and police reports

12-8-00

To the editor:

We are Lincoln residents who are staying the winter in Hopewell, Ar. It seems to us you do not update the police reports nor the obits often enough. If there are none to report, can’t you give the date, and state: "no obituaries today"? We rely on this service and hope it will be improved.

Jean Naylor

Jean,

Glad to have you reading from your winter quarters.

We have made and continue making many changes here at Lincoln Daily News, as you may have noticed. We are constantly evaluating and seeking to provide more valuable news to our readers.

In September we stopped gathering all the individual arrest reports. We did not find there was enough interest in those reports for our readers, since we chose not to include the names or exact addresses of the suspects arrested.

At that time we began keeping daily contact with our police department and now choose to report significant events which may be of interest to the community, as well as the police efforts at proactive community activities.

Crime reports are generally so small that they are usually provided as front-page-only stories. They are also infrequent, which is another great thing to be able to say about our community. When important things do occur, you will see them in Lincoln Daily News represented as truthfully and plainly as we can report them.

It is our opinion that court reports, though not timely or sensational, are a sufficient means of reporting general criminal activities. Court reports provide a legitimized, valid representation of criminal activity in Logan County. They reflect criminal activities in a way that police reports do not. It is no longer an allegation, some misunderstanding between people, or anything else. The person has been found guilty by a panel of their peers or a judge.

Court reports, unlike police reports, include the name and address of the convicted person, and the date and location of the crime. The court reports are posted weekly, most often on Saturdays, under the Law & Courts section.

I think we'll try your advice about the obits and provide a date and notice saying "no obits" when there are none. It is good to be able to say it has been a slow time for this activity.

Thanks for your comments,

Former ballplayers

12-6-00

To whom it may concern:

Can you tell me what has happened to Shawn Bunch and Tommy-John Gallagher this year? I figured they would be a big part of Lincoln's ball team. Has Coach Al decided to go young looking at the future of Lincoln basketball? I don't live in Lincoln but I try to keep up on B/G's basketball teams.

Thanks,

Rick C

Word on the streets...Bunch transferred to Springfield-Southeast and Gallagher didn't go out for basketball this season.

Holiday Hoops...Oops, game not there

12-5-00

Dear LDN:

I was looking forward to the broadcast of the Lincoln game Wednesday night, but there was a different program on! Living in Chicago, I was really pleased to find that LDN was broadcasting Railer sports (especially basketball), but it sure was a disappointment not to be able to tune in tonight — your advertising sure made it look like it was going to be on. Hope you can be a little more clear on your site as to which programming will be broadcast.

Other than that, the site is great! I visit all the time! It really keeps me up to date with all the "goings-on" in Lincoln (and I visit quite a few of your sponsors when I'm in town as well!)

Regards,

Jeff Weingarz

An avid LDN surfer...

Our apologies to all those who logged on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving for the Holiday Hoops game. It was not on. We did have it scheduled on Hear it Here! Instead you found the Faks Machine, a great show, but definitely not the Railers.

We had not been informed previously that our connection, the Linc On TV, has an agreement with their two regularly scheduled shows, The City Council Meeting and The Faks Machine, on Monday and Wednesday evenings. They will not broadcast a game during those times on Mondays or Wednesdays. It is an uncommon event that a game is scheduled Monday or Wednesday. So you can look forward to hearing many other games. Most are scheduled for Friday evenings.
