Wreath, swag, trees top the voting

[DEC. 6, 2000]  A candlelight courthouse tour, a children's story time and music by local choirs, as well as lavishly decorated Christmas trees, wreaths and swags, brought nearly 3,000 people to the Logan County Courthouse for the 2000 Festival of Trees from Nov. 24 to Dec. 3.

Festival goers had the opportunity to vote for their favorite trees, wreaths and swags. The top vote-getters were:

  • Large tree: "Snow Buddies Spectacular," sponsored by CEFCU, decorated by the Lincoln CEFCU staff
  • Small tree: "Victorian Jewel," sponsored by Graue Pharmacy, decorated by Carrie Granitto
  • Wreath: "A Berry Merry Christmas," sponsored by Logan County Farm Bureau Women's Committee, decorated by Dave Sitko.
  • Swag: "Mystique," sponsored by State Bank of Lincoln, decorated by Starr Hull

Sandy Wilmert of Lincoln was the winner of the public raffle tree. The other items were available by silent auction at the festival site for a week, with the auction concluding at the 'Tis the Season Gala last Friday.

Proceeds are divided between Main Street Lincoln and the Abraham Lincoln
Healthcare Foundation, organizers of the Festival of Trees. Lincoln Land Communications was the premiere sponsor of the Festival of Trees.

The 18-foot Logan County Christmas Tree, with more than 400 ornaments donated by local families, individuals, businesses and organizations, will be on display in the rotunda of the courthouse throughout the holiday season. Ornaments are still being accepted for the tree.

MediaOne to move office
to Keokuk Street location

[NOV. 30, 2000]  The office of MediaOne cable television service will be leaving its 125 N. Kickapoo location for larger quarters at 1102 Keokuk St., next to Illinois American Water Company, according to Bill White, local manager. The new office will open on Dec. 18.

"The new location will meet our customers’ and employees’ current and future needs," White said, pointing out that it would offer both more office space and more parking for customers.

MediaOne, which has been acquired by AT&T, will see yet another change in ownership soon, possibly as early as Dec. 31, White said. The Lincoln cable company, along with others in central Illinois, including Springfield, Decatur, Bloomington and Peoria, is being acquired by Insight Communications. At the present time no change is planned in service or price, but White said that January is usually the month when rates are adjusted.

Although the payment slot at the 125 N. Kickapoo site will be closed, customers will still be able to drop off payments at the box by the Kickapoo Street city garage, less than a block from the old location, White said.
