Lincoln College women’s basketball

[DEC. 8, 2000]  Two second-half spurts carried the Lincoln College women's basketball team to a 75-63 victory over Carl Sandburg of Galesburg at the Lynx gym Thursday night. The victory runs the LC record to 8-1 for the season.

After trailing the visiting Carl Sandburg squad by a point at halftime, 32-31, Lincoln College came out smoking in the second half, and a 13-2 run in the first four minutes gave the Lynx a 44-34 lead. Carl Sandburg battled back and actually took a 61-58 lead with 5:52 remaining in the game. Sarah McLaughlin scored a goal and added a pair of free throws to give the Lynx the lead with 4:04 left. The Lynx finished the game on a 17-2 run to close out the visitors. Lincoln connected on 19 of 32 shots in the second half while the visitors made 12 of 41 attempts.

Coach Carol Wilson said, "Sarah (McLaughlin) picked us up at the end. She was very instrumental in our stretch run. We got off to a quick start in the second half, and that was probably the difference in the game (13-2 run). Our bench played a key role. When we made the two second-half runs, we had different players on the court. Our depth helped change the complexion of the game. I felt we handled adversity well, especially when we fell behind in the second half."

Lincoln College men’s basketball

[DEC. 8, 2000]  Lincoln College handed Carl Sandburg a 77-70 defeat in men's basketball at the Lincoln College gymnasium Thursday night to run the season record to 8-2. The Lynx displayed a balanced scoring attack with five players reaching double figures.

Coach B. J. McCullum said, "I was pleased with the first half, but the second half was a different story. We weren't very patient in the second half, and as a result they (Carl Sandburg) got some easy baskets off the break and some open 3-point shots. We have been preaching that we need to go inside more, and maybe this will help them realize it a little more. We didn't take a lot of good shots in the second half."

Lincoln bolted to a comfortable 45-27 halftime lead and was on top 56-31 with 14:10 left in the second half. Carl Sandburg went on an 18-5 run to cut the Lynx lead to 61-49 with 6:38 left. Lincoln scored nine of the next 11 points to again go on top, by a 70-52 margin, before the Chargers made one more surge. However, they never got any closer than the seven-point margin at the end of the contest.

Lincoln finished the game with 45 percent shooting (27 of 60) while the visitors hit 43 percent (25 of 53). The Lynx forced the Chargers into 25 turnovers in the contest. Rebounding was about even with the visitors having a 36-35 edge. Eric Crockrell and Brian Thorsen both pulled down eight boards to lead Lincoln. Jerron Hobson contributed eight assists for the Lynx.
