Carroll Catholic state champs

[DEC. 22, 2000] Carroll Catholic girls are the new state champs. This is their first state title. The championship game of the Illinois Elementary School Association Girls Class 8A state basketball tournament was played at Jacksonville Thursday night.

It wasn’t even a close game when the Carroll Catholic girls went up against Carrollton. The Lincoln girls won 32-17.

The undefeated team coached by Ann Stoltzenberg is made up of Maria Benitez, Kristin Fleshman, Jeris Freesmeier, Julie Fults, Kelsey Gephart, Katie Green, Megan Hoffert, Nicole Humbert, Kelly Marten, Erin Mason, Ali Robinson, Maggie Schonauer, Whitney O’Donoghue and Ashleigh Yarcho.

This concludes a perfect season for the Crusaders, 24-0, giving them several distinctions. They are only the fifth 8A team to have a perfect season, and their 24-win record is the second highest of those five teams.

Second place Carrollton ended with a 23-3 record.

In the game between Warsaw and Ransom for third and fourth places, Warsaw won 58-41.

Carroll Catholic advances to
state championship match

[DEC. 21, 2000] Carroll Catholic junior high girls basketball team continues steamrolling their way to an 8A state title. Carroll Catholic girls fought hard against Warsaw at Jacksonville, winning by two points in overtime. Their 53-51 win makes them the top-seeded team and allowed them to maintain their perfect season record (23-0).

Teams compete tonight for positions as follows:

For third place: Ransom (21-1) vs. Warsaw (23-2) at 6 p.m.

For championship and second place: Lincoln Carroll Catholic (23-0) vs. Carrolton (23-2) at 7:15 p.m.

LCHS girls vs. Olympia
LCHS boys vs. Springfield

[DEC. 20, 2000] Both Lincoln Community High School basketball teams played and won yesterday afternoon. The girls team traveled to Stanford to compete against Olympia High School. Lincoln narrowly won, 43-41. The boys team hosted Springfield here in Lincoln, but the scores were not as close as the girls game. The final score was 67-41.

Ingram scored the Lady Railers’ two 3-pointers. She also scored three free throws, for a total of nine points. Bunch scored seven points with two field goals and three free throws. Humbert, Johnson and Froschauer each scored six points. They each made two field goals and two free throws. Oller made five points, and Cook made four points for Lincoln. As a team, Lincoln’s girls basketball team made 13 field goals, 15 free throws and 43 points.

Gaither led Olympia’s team with a lot of help from Doornbos and Fraher. Gaither made four field goals, eight free throws and 16 points. Doornbos also earned four field goals, but made only three free throws, to equal 11 points. Fraher made nine free throws. Bachman had two field goals, one free throw and five points. Altogether, the team made 10 field goals, 21 free throws and 41 points.

The junior varsity girls team also played in Olympia. The final score of the game was 61-46, Olympia.

The Railsplitters made seven 3-pointers in their game: three by Alexander, two by Tungate, one by Williams and one by Schrader. Alexander and Tungate led Lincoln’s charge. Alexander had six field goals and two free throws to equal 17 points. Tungate also made six field goals, but only one free throw, to equal 15 points. The rest of the players’ statistics were as follows: Williams 3-0-7, Schonauer 3-0-6, Farmer 1-4-6, Knopp 1-3-5, Schrader 2-0-5, Welch 2-0-4 and Komnick 1-0-2, for a total of 25 field goals, 10 free throws and 67 points.

Wingert made all of Springfield’s four 3-pointers. As a team, Springfield made 14 field goals, nine free throws and 41 points.

Hartsburg-Emden vs. Decatur St. Teresa

[DEC. 20, 2000] St. Teresa of Decatur traveled up to Hartsburg yesterday afternoon to play a game against Hartsburg-Emden High School’s boys basketball team. Unfortunately, Hartsburg-Emden lost, 86-57.

Hartsburg made four 3-pointers: three by Aper and one by Fletcher. Aper scored the most points for Hartsburg, 17, with his three 3-pointers, three 2-point field goals and two free throws. Ke. Leesman and Gleason each scored 10 points for their team. Ke. Leesman made three field goals and four free throws. Gleason made two field goals and six free throws. The rest of the individual statistics were as follows: Fletcher 1-0-3, Anderson 2-2-6, Behrends 3-0-6 and Wrage 2-1-5. Altogether the team scored 19 field goals and 15 free throws to make 57 points.

As a team, St. Teresa scored eight 3-pointers, 23 2-point field goals, 16 free throws and 86 points.

In the junior varsity game, Hartsburg-Emden beat St. Teresa 63-52.

Illini Central vs. Midwest Central

[DEC. 20, 2000] Illini Central’s varsity and junior varsity boys teams hosted Midwest Central in Mason City last night for two basketball games. At the halftime of the varsity game, Midwest was leading 26-24. Illini overcame Midwest’s lead to win 62-47.

Arnold and Fletcher each made a 3-pointer for Illini Central. They led Mason City’s team. Arnold made seven additional 2-point field goals and two free throws, to make 19 points. Fletcher had five 2-point field goals in addition to his 3-pointer, four free throws and 17 points. Deters had the next highest number of points, 13. He made three field goals and seven free throws. The rest of the individual statistics were as follows: Miller 1-1-3, Hankins 2-0-4 and Grimsley 0-6-6, to total 20 field goals, 20 free throws and 62 points for Illini Central’s varsity team.

Lovell made Midwest Central’s one 3-pointer in the game. Altogether, their team scored 20 field goals, six free throws and 47 points.

The junior varsity game was very close. Midwest won 55-51.
