Florida Resident Clicks on to Lincoln Daily News

2-29-00

To the editor:

I more or less grew up in Lincoln. Been down here in Florida almost 16 years; still miss being up there. Since my daughter-in-law e-mailed the address, I click on to daily news about three times a week. I really enjoy reading the happenings. Keep up the good work. I would like to see what high school basketball is doing this year. Thank you for the write-ups and Lincoln Daily News.

Thanks from Washington-Monroe School

2-28-00

Dear Editor,

We would like to extend our thanks to several people who made our recent "Jump Rope for Heart" event at Washington-Monroe Elementary School such a success. First and foremost are the jumpers, the students who collected pledges for the American Heart Association and jumped nearly non-stop at the event. Second, we thank our parent volunteers: Bev Wunderlin, Joni Hundreiser and Amy Gordon who helped with check-in, counting money, and even jumped a few times! Other volunteer "rope-twirlers" were our principal, Becky Cecil, and Washington-Monroe alum Gregg Alexander who spoke to the students about goal-setting and keeping a healthy heart. Next, our school families and the community are thanked for the very generous contributions that we received.

This year's event, the third for Washington-Monroe, raised over $1200 for the American Heart Association, surpassing our goal of $1000. We are very proud of the effort put forth by our students.

We also must thank the folks at Lincoln Daily News (.com). The students were so excited to see the media at their event and to know that they were contributing to a newsworthy cause. The following school day, students accessed lincolndailynews.com via individual computers in our computer lab. Seeing the pride on their faces, to not only read about something they had done, but to also see pictures, was indescribable! How incredibly appropriate that it happened during District #27's week of focusing on the character trait "Self - Esteem." Again, thank you to Natalie Jeckel, Sam Redding, and the others at lincolndailynews.com for letting the students at Washington-Monroe feel so important, and for letting those in the community know about one POSITIVE event that has happened at a local school. There are great things happening every day within all our schools. We're thrilled someone in the media took the time to notice.

Thanks to all,

Debbie Pettit
