LC wrestling team makes new start

[NOV. 9, 2000]  Lincoln College wrestling coach Dave Klemm, beginning his 10th season, will have to replace eight of 10 starters off last year’s fifth-place national team. The two returning starters, Pat Dowty and Matt Veach, are both returning All-Americans. The Lynx compiled a 12-3 mark in dual meets last season and had six All-Americans. Klemm has compiled a record of 84-66-1 in dual meets in his nine years at Lincoln College.

"We obviously have a lot of holes to fill," said Klemm. "We will be looking for leadership from our two returning All-Americans. It looks like we should be competitive; however, we don’t have much experience on the varsity level. Several of our wrestlers return from last season, but they were not among the starters. They did get some valuable experience wrestling in non-varsity matches."

Klemm continued, "We had our challenge matches last week, and the starting lineup will include the two All-Americans, Pat Dowty (Franklin, Ind.) at 141 pounds and Matt Veach (Springfield) at 157. Dowty will be moving up a weight class this year, having wrestled at 133 last season. Veach will continue at the 157-pound level. Our first two spots, Nathan Hilgendorf (Lincoln) at 125 and Paul Johnson (Granite City) at 133, are both untested on the college level. They are both sophomores; however, they have no varsity college wrestling experience.

"Our other starters at the present time will be Don Jones (Darien) at 149, Clint Shaw (Urbana) at 165; Matt Morel (Bourbonnais) at 174, Brushawn Adams (Springfield) at 184, Josh Lepper (Fort Wayne, Ind.) at 197 and Nathan Welsh (Quincy) at heavyweight.

[to top of second column in this article]

"We are concerned about injuries, as we have only one wrestler at the 174 and 184 class. If they should suffer from an injury, we would have to move someone out of their weight class into that position. Obviously our success is going to depend on keeping people injury-free. DeAngelo Love is returning at 133 pounds and is likely to see action. A couple of transfers, David Clark (133) and Joe Herron (149) will probably help in the second semester. They are not eligible the first semester. Herron is a Division I qualifier from last season.

"Our big goal is to qualify for nationals. Wrestling, like any other sport, has two seasons: regular and tournament time. We may struggle early; however, I think we will be ready to compete once the tournaments start at the end of the season. Harper will probably be one of our strongest opponents, as they have a solid lineup returning from last season. Harper competes in our division. We open at the Muskegon, Mich., duals, and they are ranked No. 1 in the nation in preseason polls."

Lincoln College sports information director]

Updates, updates, updates!!!

Sports news briefs

[NOV. 6, 2000]  Jeff Mayfield updates us on Andy King, Steph Reichle, LCC's trip to national volleyball competition, the Illini win over Indiana and the Bears' upset of the Colts.

Andy King and the Illinois State Redbirds

After the LDN ran a story last week on Andy King and the Illinois State Redbirds, the Birds went out and shocked No. 4-ranked Western Illinois 25-18. As you recall, Andy felt like ISU could win and possibly win out to finish the season at 7-4, which would be an amazing turnaround after the start that they endured!

[click here for LDN interview with Andy King]

Former Lady Railer Steph Reichle returns

Speaking of ISU...former Lady Railer Steph Reichle appears to be healed from last year's knee injury and is back on the court for the Lady Redbirds. She had 12 points and five steals in ISU’s 83-74 exhibition loss to the Chicago Challengers.

LCC's national title hopes fall short

LCC never got it going and lost to the eventual third-place finisher, Mid-America (Okla.) Bible, 8-15, 3-15, 15-7, 14-16. They also lost to the eventual national champions, Clearwater (Fla.) Christian, 9-15, 2-15. However, a 30-win season and a trip to California to join the Elite Eight is a great season in anybody's book. Nice going, ladies!!!

Illini keep bowl hopes alive

Wild shootout win over Indiana

Once again the LDN was Johnny on the spot. Stationed in the north end zone, the LDN coaxed the Illini to drive 78 yards with only 5:08 to play. The drive was capped on a one-yard scoring dive by quarterback Kurt Kittner, as Illinois somehow survived the Antwan Randle EL show 42-35. Coach Ron Turner calls EL the best football player in the country, period. EL's statistics Saturday support coach Turner's claim. EL rushed for 209 yards, and he accounted for four touchdowns.

Not to be outdone, Kittner finished the day with 277 yards passing, and he threw for three touchdowns and took one in himself. The game also featured an 80-yard punt return for a score by one of the LDN's favorite players, Christian Morton. Aaron Moorehead, whose dad used to play for the Bears, also caught two touchdown passes. A game ball should also go to Carey Davis, who caught a touchdown pass and also had a great all-around game.

The task will get considerably harder for the Illini, as they will have to win one of their next two games against nationally ranked opponents, Ohio State at home on Saturday and next week at Northwestern.

Bears upset Colts

The Chicago Bears rose up out of the ash heap and upset the highly touted Indianapolis Colts 27-24. After going up 27-0, they withstood a furious Colts rally as they scored 24 unanswered points of their own before turning the ball over on their final drive. Maybe Jim Miller at the quarterback position isn't such a bad idea after all.
