[NOV. 25, 2000]  Lincoln Railers played a rousing game start to finish taking the lead in the first quarter 24 – 15.  The Railers continued to pound Jefferson nearly doubling their lead each following quarter; 46 - 75 in the second, 76 – 43, the third quarter, for a winning game total 95 – 52.

Racking up 9 three point field goals for Lincoln were: Alexander 5, Williams 2, Tungate 1, and Farmer 1.

[NOV. 25, 2000]  Lincoln College advanced to the championship game of the Three Rivers Community College tournament Friday by defeating Roane State, Tn. 84-64.   The victory runs the Lincoln College record to 6-1 for the season.    The Lynx will play Three Rivers for the championship at 7 p.m. Saturday.

B. J. McCullum, head coach of the Lynx said, "I thought Roane State was an outstanding three point shooting team and they did get a jump on us in the first half because they were 6 of 12 from the thee point line.  In the second half, we did a much better job of communicating and they had to work much harder for shots.   After shooting 60 percent the first half, we held them to 35 percent in the second half, while forcing 25 turnovers for the game.   Our guards did a great job of hawking the ball on defense and our post players were very active offensively.  Brian Moffitt gave us a spark by getting 11 points in the second half."

Marlon Brooks led a balance Lynx attack with 15 points.  Also hitting double figures for the winners were Jay Bates with 14, Maurice Shurney with 12 and Moffitt and Eric Crockrell with 11 each.   The Lynx shot 52 percent from the floor for the game (35 of 67) while Roane State finished at 47 percent (24 of 51).  Crockrell pulled down seven rebounds as the Lynx had a slight 34-32 edge.   Joel Zimmerman was the lone Roane State player to reach double digits with 14.  

Lincoln held a slim 43-37 halftime lead and blew the game open in the second half giving up just 27 points while scoring 41 of their own.

[NOV. 24, 2000]  Lincoln Railers jump-started their lead and added to it quarter by quarter over Pontiac during Wednesday night’s holiday tournament game. The first quarter closed with a 20-7 lead for Lincoln, followed by 37-18 in the second quarter, to tally a 57-25 halftime score. The third quarter rang up to 56-31, and the fourth quarter ended with nearly a double-score win of 75-39.

High scorers were Alexander 22, Williams 13, Tungate 13 and Schonauer 12 points.

[NOV. 24, 2000]  Mount Pulaski girls lost to Clinton girls in a gradual slide at Wednesday night’s holiday game. Each quarter Clinton increased their lead, 10-8, 33-12, 45-23, to a final 65-29 finish.

Mount Pulaski stats: Clevenger 4-2-10, Sanders 5-0-10, Rucks 1-1-3, Beckers 1-0-2, Howe 1-0-2, Jason 1-0-2, totals 13-3-29.

Clinton claimed three 3-point field goals: Miller 2, Fry 1.

[NOV. 24, 2000]  Lincoln College broke from a 39-39 halftime tie to post an 87-81 victory over Redlands Community College in the opening round of the Three Rivers men's basketball tournament at Poplar Bluff, Mo., on Thursday.   The Lynx, now 5-1 on the season, will play Roane State on Friday in the tournament.

Coach B. J. McCullum said, "I thought we were very flat at the start of the game. Our 285-mile trip today might have had something to do with that.  I thought Marlon Brooks did a great job of keeping us in the game, and Eric Crockrell did a great job on the inside for us tonight.  We will have to get off to a better start tomorrow (Friday) night against Roane State, Tenn. or things could get a little tough for us.  It is always nice to win."

After hitting on 15 of 39 shots from the floor in the first half, Lincoln College blistered the nets at nearly 53 percent in the second half (20 of 38).   Redlands shot a respectable 44 percent the first half and picked it up to 64 percent the second half (16 of 25).  Leading the scoring for the Lynx was Crockrell with 27 points on 12 of 15 shots from the floor and 3 of 7 at the foul line. Crockrell also had a team high of eight rebounds as the teams battled to a 41-41 total on the boards.   Joining Crockrell in double figures were Brooks with 18 points, Maurice Shurney with 13 and Jay Bates with 10.  Iran Bolden led four Redlands players in double figures with 17 points.

[NOV. 22, 2000]  The Gateway Conference has announced that Lincoln's Andy King has been named Offensive Lineman of the Week as a result of ISU's 40-7 drubbing of Southwest Missouri State University. King graded out at 77 percent with seven knockdown blocks and no sacks allowed. King was also instrumental in helping the Redbird offense set at least two new records this season. The offense racked up a record total of 5,040 yards of total offense, which means their average of 458.2 per game is also a new record. Although the Redbirds did not receive a postseason berth, they finished the season 7-4, winning their final six games in a row, and ended up being ranked No. 25 in the country in the final I-AA regular season poll. Coincidentally, King and ISU were undefeated during the LDN's coverage of their season!

[NOV. 22, 2000]  Former Lincoln College star Marcus Griffin broke out with a huge game Tuesday, finishing the night with 19 points and eight rebounds to lead Illinois to a convincing 90-80 spanking of the Maryland (1-1) Terrapins. Other big men doing the job were our own Brian Cook, with 11 points and nine rebounds, and Sergio McClain, who registered a double-double, with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Illini's interior dominance led them to a whopping 55-37 edge in the battle of the boards. Frank Williams continues his transformation into a stellar point guard as he led Illinois in scoring with 21 points.

Illinois, now 3-0, faces their sternest test of the young season tonight as they tackle the No. 2 Arizona Wildcats for the championship of the Maui Classic.

[NOV. 22, 2000]  Lincoln College rolled to a 92-56 victory over Black Hawk Tuesday night at the Lincoln gym. The victory raises the men's record to 4-1 for the season. The Lynx are in action Nov. 23-25 at the Three Rivers Tournament.

Pacing a balanced Lynx attack with 18 points was Eric Crockrell. The sophomore guard connected on 7 of 8 field goal attempts and added 4 of 8 from the free-throw line.  Crockrell scored his 18 points in just over 18 minutes of play. Joining Crockrell in double figures were Jerron Hobson with 13, Brian Moffitt with 12 and Jay Bates with 11. Lincoln College coach B. J. McCullum played 13 players in the contest, and 12 cracked the scoring column.

Lincoln connected on 53 percent of its field goal attempts in the first quarter to take a commanding 48-31 lead into intermission. Lincoln finished the game by making 37 of 70 field goal attempts. Defensively Lincoln held Black Hawk to 35 percent shooting.  Maurice Shurney pulled down seven rebounds as Lincoln had a 43-40 edge.

[NOV. 22, 2000]  The Preachers hit the floor again in their ninth game of the season, and the floor was hot as they waged battle here in Lincoln with Greenville. Lincoln maintained a narrow lead at the end of each half and won the game by 4 points. In the first half, Lincoln scored 34 points and Greenville scored 31. Coach Randy Kirk highlighted Dante Watson for his performance during the first half of the game. In the second half Lincoln made 46 points and Greenville made 45. The final score of the game was 80-76.

In post-game review, coach Randy Kirk had this to say, "We did not play well the first half, but we have tempo and momentum, so we had the lead. In the second half Greenville came out ready to play and we didn’t. We lost our lead and we got down big!" However, coach Kirk recalls, "The turning point was Jim Turney’s back-to-back 3-pointers for Lincoln. Then we took over!"

Lincoln Christian College had five 3-pointers: two by Clark, two by Turney and one by Below. The individual statistics are as follows: Clark 9-8-28, Weber 1-0-2, Bowman 2-6-10, Below 2-1-6, Watson 7-4-18, Turney 2-0-6, Okusami 3-0-6, and Simmons 2-0-4. Overall, the team made 28 field goals and19 free throws.

Greenville had one more 3-pointer than Lincoln, as Lott and Clemens each made three 3-point goals. The individual statistics are as follows: Lott 4-0-11, Clemens 9-1-22, Sloggett 2-1-5, Jones 2-2-6, Mclaren 5-0-10, Bennett 4-3-11 and Whitler 4-3-11, for a team total of 30 field goals and 10 free throws.

[NOV. 22, 2000]  Fourteen Lincoln College women reached the scoring column for coach Carl Wilson as the Lady Lynx posted an impressive 72-52 victory against Black Hawk Tuesday night at Lincoln. The victory runs the Lynx record to 5-1.  Black Hawk East will be the next opponent for the Lady Lynx, Nov. 29, at Lincoln.

Tameeka Dawson paced the Lynx with 13 points, and she was joined in double figures by Katie Skaggs with 10. Lincoln was never seriously threatened by the visitors as the Lynx raced to a 33-17 halftime lead. Black Hawk picked up the pace in the second half with 35 points, however, Lincoln tallied 39 points of its own. The Lady Lynx made 18 of 71 shots from the floor while Black Hawk was 13 of 50.  Black Hawk put up 20 3-point attempts, making six. The Lady Lynx were 1 of 3 from 3-point land. 

Three Lincoln College players reached double figures in rebounding, with Jessica Trainer’s 14 leading the way. Christine Lott pulled down 11 boards and Dawson added 10.  The Lynx dominated the boards 68-36 in the game.

Lincoln

The boys basketball Railers opened their season with 62-43 victory over Bartonville-Limestone. Chad Tungate led the way with 23 points, four rebounds and five assists. Gregg Alexander hit for 18 points, and Paris Williams finished the night with 6 points and four rebounds. Lincoln's stingy defense limited Limestone to only 32 percent shooting from the field. The Railers will next meet Pontiac in Wednesday's nightcap.

Maui

Brian Cook registered a double-double, finishing with 12 points and 14 rebounds, and fellow teammate Frank Williams scored 22 points as the Illinois Fighting Illini erased a 14-point first-half deficit to beat Nevada-Las Vegas 74-69. Williams had an impressive line, dishing out six assists and pulling down five rebounds to go with his game-high point total. Former Lincoln College product Marcus Griffin tossed in 15 points to help the Illini's cause. Next up for Illinois is a 6 p.m. semifinal showdown tonight with No. 6 Maryland.

[NOV. 21, 2000]  The Lincoln High School’s men’s basketball team competed against Limestone yesterday in Lincoln. Lincoln led at the end of every quarter and won the game 62-43.

Lincoln had four 3-pointers: two by Alexander and two by Tungate. The Lincoln statistics were as follows: Williams 2-2-6, Alexander 6-4-18, Komnick 2-0-4, Tungate 7-7-23, Aper 1-0-2, Schonauer 0-3-3, and Welch 3-0-6, for a team total of 21 field goals, 16 free throws, and 62 total points.

Limestone’s team made six 3-pointers — one each by Clarke, Thomason, Holley, Schmidgall, Sage and Riley. The individual statistics were as follows: Snyder 2-0-4, Clarke 2-0-5, Thomason 3-0-7, Holley 1-0-3, Schmidgall 1-0-3, Sage 2-0-5, Riley 1-2-5, and Williams 5-1-11, for a total of 17 field goals, three free throws, and 43 points.

[NOV. 21, 2000]  Bethany High School’s women’s basketball team traveled to Mount Pulaski to compete against Mount Pulaski’s players. Mount Pulaski more than doubled Bethany’s score in the first quarter but lost the lead in the second quarter. The final score of the game was Bethany 59, Mount Pulaski 42.

Rucks and Sanders made Mount Pulaski’s two 3-pointers. Team statistics were as follows: Howe 1-0-2, Clevenger 3-0-6, Jason 0-0-0, K. Beckers 2-1-5, Rucks 5-4-15, Sanders 6-1-14, Faith 0-0-0, E. Beckers 0-0-0. Totals: 17-6-42.

M. Griggs made five and Spellman made two of the Bethany’s seven 3-pointers. Bethany’s team statistics were as follows: Roney 3-1-7, M. Griggs 8-1-22, Cuttell 1-1-3, P. Griggs 3-0-6, Rhodea 1-0-2, Ashley 2-0-4, Haegen 1-2-4, Spellman 2-0-4, Robinson 2-1-5. Total counts: 23-6-59.

[NOV. 21, 2000]  Lincoln College split a pair of women's basketball games at the Lincoln College gym this past weekend. Lincoln began the weekend with an 82-54 trouncing of Morton Cicero and then lost a tough 80-75 game to Lincoln Trail in overtime.  The overtime loss is the first defeat this season for the Lady Lynx, now 4-1 on the season. Lincoln Trail improved its record to 3-3.

Fifteen different players cracked the scoring column in the rout against Morton.  Leading the way for the Lady Lynx was Katie Skaggs with 14 points. She was joined in double figures by Heidi Weil with 11 points. Lincoln bolted to a 43-20 halftime lead and was never seriously challenged by the visitors.

In the game against Lincoln Trail, the Lady Lynx fell behind 40-29 in the first half. Lincoln returned the favor in the second half by outscoring the visitors 40-29, sending the game into overtime. After the two teams traded baskets, knotting the score at 71-all, things fell apart for the Lady Lynx.  Meredith Stevens hit the first of two free throws to give the Stateswomen a 72-71 lead.  After she missed the second free throw, Lincoln Trail grabbed the rebound and Stevens was fouled again. This time she made both free throws, increasing the lead to 74-71. On the inbound pass, the Lady Lynx were called for a violation, and Lincoln Trail scored a field goal to increase the margin to 76-71. The Lynx were unable to recover.

Coach Carol Wilson said, "We dug a hole in the first half, but I was proud of the way we came back in the second half.  We showed a lot of character and gave ourselves a chance to win; we just didn't execute down the stretch.  The second half does give us something to build on for the future."

[NOV. 20, 2000]  Roy S. Anderson gymnasium on the campus of Lincoln Community High School is sure to be the hot spot this week. The boys basketball Railers will be hosting their annual Thanksgiving tournament. Tonight's matchups include:

[NOV. 20, 2000]  Lincoln College's men's swimming team posted an impressive championship over seven other schools at the Illinois Wesleyan Invite Saturday. Lincoln was the lone junior college team in the invitational. The Lynx swimmers posted 157 points to easily outdistance second-place North Central, which finished with 96 points.   

In the women's portion of the meet, Illinois Wesleyan women scored 165 points to win their division. Lincoln placed seventh in the eight-team field with 25 points.

Sean Calhoun was double winner in diving for the Lynx, winning the 3-meter and 1-meter titles.  Teammate Justin Thompson placed second in the 1-meter diving.  Lincoln College won both the 200-yard medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.  Other winners for the Lynx were Fedrico Gentry in the 200 freestyle; Jacob Sexton in the 100 freestyle; Keith Tobin in the 500 freestyle and Ramiro Palmar in the 100 backstroke.

Emily Sansale paced the women swimmers for Lincoln College with a fourth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle and a sixth in the 200 freestyle.  She was also on the fifth-place 200 freestyle relay team.

[NOV. 20, 2000]  Lincoln Christian Preachers played a second game over the weekend. It was against Iowa Wesleyan. With a halftime score of 35-57 in Wesleyan’s favor, the warmed-up Preachers bettered Wesleyan 40-33 in the second half for a game total of 75-90, with Wesleyan the winner.

In a post-game review, Coach Randy Kirk had this to say, "We did not handle the ball very well. Our press was ineffective. We didn't do a good transition from press into half-court defense."

In highlights, "Dante Watson was the most important player over the weekend," Kirk said. "He proved he can play with scholarshipped players."

LCC men’s basketball vs. Indiana Wesleyan
[NOV. 20, 2000]  Lincoln Christian College Preachers traveled to Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Friday to play Indiana  Wesleyan. The Preachers battled it out, being outscored in both halves, 45-27 and 45-34, for a 90-61 loss.
