Field Fires

Raging field fires caused crop destruction in and around Logan County.  Fields that were green less than three weeks ago are now acting like tinder this year. Numerous dry, standing corn and bean fields have caught fire before harvest. Hot, sunny, dry, breezy days have turned fields to golden, dry-as-paper fire hazards.

Multiple fire departments responded to four fires in the area: two in Mount Pulaski, one in San Jose and another in Elkhart. The fires affected multiple property owners at each of the fires.

Huge clouds of smoke could be seen on the horizon throughout the day Tuesday. Smoke could be seen and smelled at I-55 north of Lincoln. Ash by the handfuls was reported all along Route 10 in town in Lincoln.

Firefighters who came in off the hot fields in the late afternoon were parched and blackened by smoke and dirt from the fire just west of the Broadwell-Elkhart area.

Kathy Kaesebier appreciatively states, "The fire departments were awesome. They came in no time from all over.  The neighbors were great too.  They came and disked around the fire perimeters."  The neighbors working with the fire departments were Rob and Bill Gleason,  Mason Boyer, and Paul Bottrell.
