Lincoln vs. Springfield Southeast

[JAN. 15, 2001]  Springfield Southeast took the lead on their home court Saturday night. Opening with 20-15 in the first quarter, they kept their edge all the way to game end with 34-25 in the second quarter, 53-40 in the third and a final score of 68-48.

High scorers for Lincoln: Alexander 15 and Tungate 13.

Scoring five 3-point field goals for Lincoln: Schonauer 2, Schrader 2 and Tungate.

Lincoln College vs. Lewis & Clark

[JAN. 15, 2001] 

LC men

Seventh-ranked Lincoln College defeated Lewis & Clark 68-63 Saturday at the Lincoln College gym. Lincoln is now 12-3 for the season.

Lincoln used a strong defensive effort and some easy baskets to race to a 37-24 halftime lead over Lewis & Clark, and held on in the second half  despite shooting just 36 percent from the floor. Coach B. J. McCullum said,  "We were out of sync in the second half.  In the first half, we forced some turnovers and got some easy layups; however, in the second half we didn't play with much energy and didn't force turnovers.   Right now our post play is almost nonexistent.   We are trying to play one-on-one basketball instead of team ball."

 

 Jay Bates topped the Lynx with 21 points. The only other Lincoln player to reach double figures was Eric Crockrell with 11. In addition to scoring 21 points, Bates pulled down a team-high 15 rebounds and handed out four assists. Crockrell added seven boards as the Lynx had a slim 44-43 rebounding edge in the game.

Lincoln finished the game shooting 43 percent (26 of 61) after going 14 of 28 the first half for 50 percent. The Lynx also hurt themselves at the foul line by making only 14 of 25 shots for 56 percent. Lincoln limited Lewis & Clark to 37 percent field goal shooting.

LC women

The Lincoln College women had little trouble with Lewis & Clark Saturday at the Lincoln College gym as they posted a 76-56 victory.    The win boosts the Lynx record to 11-2 for the season.

Tameeka Dawson tossed in 18 points to lead the Lady Lynx to victory.   Joining Dawson in double figures were Christine Lott and Sarah McLaughlin with 12 and 11 points respectively. Cunningham topped all scorers with 20 points for Lewis & Clark.

Lincoln College coach Carl Wilson said, "We played well and moved the ball very well the first 10 minutes of the game. We got the lead, and then we kind of let up. I thought Tammy Bausley gave us a lift coming off the bench. She handled the ball well and made a couple of big shots."

Dawson scored eight of her points in the first half and Candace Sheley added seven as the Lady Lynx raced to a 34-21 halftime lead. The Lynx added 42 second-half points with Dawson netting 10, McLaughlin eight and Lott six.

Lincoln Christian College vs. Sanford Brown

[JAN. 15, 2001]  The LCC Preachers topped Sanford Brown by a whopping 41 points. Scores for each half were 57-28 and 52-68, for a game total of 109-68.

Leading the Preachers were Matt Clark with 24 points and Donnie Bowman with 22 points. Clark made four 3-point field goals, had three assists and three turnovers. Also making 3-point field goals for the Preachers: Raymer 2, Weber 2, Bowman 1, Turney 2 and Simmons 1. Out grabbing the ball on rebounds, Dante Watson had a total of eight rebounds, while Bowman grabbed 6.

LCC team stats: Clark 9-2-24, Raymer 4-0-10, Weber 2-0-6, Johnson 1-2-4, Bowman 9-3-22, Watson 4-2-10, Turney 3-0-8, Okusami 5-3-13, Barker 0-1-1 and Simmons 5-0-11; totaling 42 field goals, 13 free throws, for 109 points.

Olympia vs. Prairie Central

Olympia boys played Prairie Central at Fairbury Friday night.  Prairie Central took the lead in the first quarter and kept it to game finish, winning 69-57.

Quarter scores (Olympia first): 15-21, 27-34, 41-52, 57-69.

Lee led the team, scoring 18 points, including a 3-point field goal and three points from free throws.

Olympia team stats: Dillenburg 4-2-13, Lee 7-3-18, Holliger 3-0-9, Sherman 1-0-2, Kendrick 2-2-6, Walker 1-0-2, Wright 1-0-2 and Olson 2-1-5; totaling 21 field goals, eight free throws, for 57 points. Also on the roster: Hames, Brand, Sutton, Wise and Burkhart.

Illini Central vs. Havana

Illini Central mopped up the floor with Havana on Havana’s home court Friday night.  IC widened their lead each quarter, 22-14, 36-25, 49-38, to a win of 71-49.

High scorers for Illini Central were Arnold, 21 with one 3-point field goal, and Fletcher, 18 with two 3-point fields goals.

Illini Central stats: Miller 3-0-6, Hankins 4-3-11, Fletcher 7-2-18, Grimsley 3-1-7, Giesler 0-1-1, Arnold 8-4-21 and Jo. Deters 2-3-7; totaling 27 field goals, 14 free throws, for 71 points.

Hartsburg-Emden vs. Illiopolis

Hartsburg-Emden locked horns with Illiopolis in a heated battle at Illiopolis Friday night.  Hartem had the lead in the first quarter 17-9, lost it in the second quarter 21-24, regained it in the third 37-30 and finished with a solid 58-40 win.

Hartsburg-Emden team stats: Aper 2-6-12, Behrends 4-1-11, Anderson 2-0-4, Gleason 2-0-6, Jones 4-3-11, K. Leesman and Wrage 4-0-14; totaling 21 field goals, 10 free throws, for 58 points.

Central State Eight

Lincoln vs. Chatham Glenwood

Lincoln trounced Chatham on their own home court Friday night. Down by four in the first quarter 14-18, Lincoln exploded with a 32-point gain for a halftime lead of 46-29, picked up another 20 points in the third 66-36, and  brought home the bacon 76-45 by game end.

Most those points were rung up by leading player Gregg Alexander, scoring 34 points.  Alexander had five 3-point field goals and five free throws accounting for 20 of those points.  Chad Tungate brought in 14 points and Bunch had one 3-point field goal.

Railer team stats: Williams 2-1-5, Alexander 12-5-34, Komnick 0-4-4, Tungate 6-2-14, Bunch 1-0-3, Schonauer 1-0-2, Farmer 0-1-1, Schrader 4-2-10, Welch 1-0-2 and Werner 0-1-1; totaling 27 field goals, 16 free throws, for 76 points.  Also on the roster: Knopp, Aper, Gallagher, Ashley, Peters.

Olympia vs. Metamora

Olympia faced Metamora on their home court.   The Olympia girls led the first three quarters, but Metamora turned up the heat and stole the game in the fourth.

Quarter scores (Olympia first): 21-16, 37-32, 47-45, 49-60.

Olympia’s Doombos turned in a high score of 28.  She had 11 field goals and two free throws.  Bachman brought in 10 points and had the team's one 3-point field goal.

Prairie Central fell to Olympia by three points in overtime, losing 41-38. The Olympia girls poured it on during the second half of the hard-fought game.

Lincoln College vs. Lakeland

[JAN. 12, 2001] 

LC men

Lincoln College returned to the basketball court after nearly a month off and lost a 91-80 decision to Lakeland on the hosts’ court in Mattoon Thursday night.   The loss drops the seventh-ranked Lynx to 11-3 on the season.    Lincoln will be at home Saturday against Lewis & Clark.

Lincoln and Lakeland battled to a 43-43 tie at halftime, however, the hosts made 14 of 25 shots from the floor for 56 percent the second half.   Lincoln was able to make 43 percent (15-35) of its shots the second half after shooting nearly 55 percent (18-33) in the first half.   The hosts had a huge 48-24 advantage on the board against Lincoln College.

Marlon Brooks had an outstanding game with 30 points, including 6 of 13 from 3-point land.   Jay Bates and Brian Moffitt contributed double figures for coach B. J. McCullum, with 17 and 12 respectively.  Lakeland had five players in double figures, led by 21 points from Jovan Fisher.

LC women

Following a long layoff, the Lincoln College Lady Lynx found the going tough in the first half, as they lost an 85-68 contest to Lakeland at Mattoon Thursday night.    The loss drops Lincoln to 10-2 for the season while Lakeland improved to 11-4.

In the first half, the two Lindsey girls scored 27 points for Lakeland six points more than the Lynx scored and with help from their teammates, Lakeland raced to a 52-21 halftime advantage and never looked back.

Tameeka Dawson led the Lincoln College scoring with 19 points while Ronni Beebe added 16 and Sarah McLaughlin chipped in with 13.  Kris Lindsey led Lakeland with 28 points, 14 in each half.

Olympia vs. IVC

Spectators witnessed a real barnburner on the Chillicothe court Tuesday night. Olympia and IVC played their hearts out all four quarters before time was up and IVC claimed the win by two points.

Just look at these quarter scores, with Olympia listed first: 8-8, 18-21, 32-32, 49-51.

Olympia team stats: Dillenburg 1-0-3, Lee 3-4-11, Holliger 4-0-11, Sutton 2-2-7, Kendrick 3-2-9 and Olson 3-2-8; totaling 16 field goals, 10 free throws and 49 points.

Warrensburg came to town carrying a big stick. They came on strong in the first quarter and kept that edge to the finish, winning 65-46.

Lincoln vs. Springfield Lanphier

The courts heated up Monday night when the Lady Railers traveled to Springfield to meet Springfield Lanphier. After setting a nice lead in the first half, the Railers had to pick up the tempo as Lanphier poured on the heat in the second half. The Railers found themselves behind by three points 15 seconds before game end. It was Beckee Oller’s two plays for four points in the last 15 seconds that gave the Lady Railers their win by only one point, 43-42.

Nice teamwork, girls!

Quarter scores (Lincoln first): 17-8, 31-20, 35-32, 43-42.

Team stats: Dawson 2-1-5, Humbert 3-0-6, Ingram 5-4-16, Carey 0-2-2, Bunch 0-2-2 and Oller 4-4-12; totaling 14 field goals, 13 free throws, for 43 points.

Olympia vs. Eureka

The Olympia girls warmed their home court with a win over Eureka. Taking the lead in the first quarter, they led each quarter, 16-15, 36-27, 54-43, for a final score of 64-53.

Olympia team stats: Prager 1-0-3, Coit 1-0-2, Short 1-0-2, Fraher 3-0-6, Bachman 1-4-6, Gaither 3-0-7, Gale 5-0-10, Goebel 1-0-2, Litwiller 4-0-10 and Doombos 6-4-16. Also on Olympia’s roster were Mendonca, Cook, Wittmer, Lubbert and Wilcox.

Team totals included 26 field goals and 11 free throws for 64 points.

One 3-point field goal was scored by Gaither.

Tomahawk

Illini Central vs. Springfield

Illini Central lost by four points on their home court in Mason City in a major upset against Springfield Ursuline. Both teams fought for the lead and ran neck in neck from start to finish.

Quarter scores (Illini Central first): 15-15, 25-28, 38-37, 47-51.

Scoring for Illini Central: Damm 5-8-11, Harvey 1-2-4, Francis 2-1-5, Oney 3-0-8 and Winkleman 4-3-11. Also on the roster: Montgomery Blackstock and Bitner. Team totals: 15 field goals and 14 free throws for a total of 47 points.

Illini Central had three 3-point field goals made by Oney (2) and Damm.

Mount Pulaski vs. Virden

Mount Pulaski girls traveled to Virden Monday night. The Hilltoppers put in a top-end game performance, trailing by only four points in the third quarter, but the lead stayed just out of their reach. Virden won by five points.

Quarter scores (Mount Pulaski first): 8-15, 16-23, 33-37, 45-50.

Mount Pulaski was led by high scorer Sanders, who made 22 points with 10 field goals, one of those a 3-pointer, and a free throw.

Mount Pulaski team stats: Beckers 2-1-5, Clevenger 3-0-6, Sanders 10-1-22, Faith 1-0-2, Rucks 3-0-6, Howe 1-0-2 and Jason 1-0-2. The girls scored 21 field goals and two free throws for a total 45 points.

Lincoln vs. Taylorville

[JAN. 8, 2001]  Lincoln steamrolled Taylorville in Saturday night's game played at Taylorville.

Lincoln set the lead with a doubled score of 16 to Taylorville's eight by the end of the first quarter. Lincoln was 37-12 at halftime, 45-18 in the third quarter, winning in the fourth with 61-35.

High scorer Gregg Alexander rang up 14 points in the first half, adding two more for a total of 16 points by game’s end.

Lincoln scored five 3-point field goals: Knopp 2, Williams, Komnick and Tungate.

Team stats: Williams 4-2-10, Alexander 7-2-16, Komnick 2-0-5, Tungate 4-0-9, Knopp 2-0-6, Aper 1-1-3, Ashley 3-2-6, Schonauer 2-0-4 and Farmer 0-2-2; scoring a total of 25 field goals and 12 free throws totaling 61 points.

Swimmers break five team records, set a personal best at invitational this weekend

[JAN. 8, 2001]  Coach Heidi Heidbreder reports the Lincoln Gator Swim Club attended an open invitational in Decatur this weekend. The Seth Dunscomb New Year opener was Jan. 5-7 at Millikin University. Swimmers succeeded in bringing home numerous awards, breaking team records and achieving new personal highs.

Sam Wood and Sean Weaver set new records for the Lincoln Gators. Wood (age 8 and under boys) swam the 100-yard individual medley (25 yards fly, 25 yards back, 25 yards breast and 25 yards freestyle) in a time of 1:41.90. Weaver (age 13 and 14 boys) set four new team records. He swam the 100 fly in a time of 1:01.46, the 200 IM in 2:21.33, the 100 free in 57.56 and the 100 breast in a time of 1:15.25.

One swimmer turned in a new personal best time, moving her up to Class A in that event.

Gabrielle Ernst achieved her first A time in the 50 freestyle with 30.32.

College volleyball

Kelsey Bruce recognized

[JAN. 8, 2001]  Former Lincoln volleyball player Kelsey Bruce was recognized for her achievements this season as a volleyball player for Illinois College in Jacksonville. Bruce brought great value to the team and was awarded a varsity letter for her accomplishments in the NCAA Division III program. She hit .186 for the season and had 185 kills, 210 digs, 29 service aces, a .947 serve percentage and 77 blocks. As a first-year player, Bruce was recognized for her solid performance and consistency throughout the season.
