Walter McCreery

Walter McCreery, 86, of Mason City died at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Mason City Area Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at First Christian Church in Mason City, with the Rev. Bill Boyce officiating.

Burial will be in Mason City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

McCreery farmed in the Mason City area for many years and later worked as a funeral director’s assistant. He was employed by Elliger, Kuntz & Davis Funeral Home in Springfield from 1965 to 1980 and worked for the Maas funeral homes in Mason City, Manito and San Jose from 1981 to 1993.

He was born Aug. 26, 1914, at Mason City to William and Florence (List) McCreery. He married Helen Garrison on Dec. 24, 1935. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, William (and Janet) McCreery of Mason City and Ronald (and Nancy) McCreery of Bolingbrook; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Wilbur McCreery.

He was a member of First Christian Church of Mason City, the Over 55 Club of Mason City and the Mason County Farm Bureau.

Memorials may be made to First Christian Church of Mason City or to the Mason City Area Nursing Home.


Jack Smith

Jack Smith, 76, of Lincoln, died at 10:55 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Maple Ridge Health Care Centre in Lincoln.

His body was cremated.

Burial, with military rites, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield.

Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln is in charge of arrangements.

Smith was a retired U.S. mail handler.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was born June 28, 1924, in Peoria to Ernie and Lena M. (Ushman) Smith. He married Barbara Prince Smith on Jan. 2, 1998, in Lincoln. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Janice Smith of Austin, Texas, and one sister, Lida Jeffers of Springfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be made to World War II Memorial Fund.

Catherine Urish

Catherine J. Urish, 50, of rural Elkhart died at 4:22 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, at the First United Methodist Church in Mount Pulaski, with the Rev. Dr. James Mahaffey officiating.

Burial will be in Elkhart Cemetery, Elkhart.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski.

Mrs. Urish was an elementary school special education teacher.

She was born Dec. 18, 1950, at Petersburg to Raymond and Alia Montgomery. She married Steven H. Urish on June 14, 1975, in Petersburg.

Surviving are her husband, of rural Elkhart; one daughter, Katie Urish of Urbana; one son, Christopher Urish of rural Elkhart; her parents, of Petersburg; two brothers, Paul (and Marilyn) Montgomery of Petersburg and Bill Montgomery of Petersburg; and two sisters, Nanatte (and Danny) Bess of Pearl and Julie Canady of Petersburg.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Mount Pulaski.

Memorials may be made to her church, to St. Louis Lung Transplant Program or the Porta Foundation (Petersburg High School).
