Landfill open additional hours

The city landfill at Broadwell Drive and Lincoln Parkway will be open additional hours starting Tuesday, April 16, through the end of May so Lincoln residents can dispose of yard waste, street superintendent Don Osborne announced recently. Hours will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. The landfill will be closed Mondays.


Channel 15 town hall meetings open to the public

CiTV Channel 15 will be hosting a series of town hall meetings this month.

The first, on Monday, April 15, will be at Friendship Manor, 925 Primm Road, from 5 to 7 p.m. The topic of the open forum will be senior issues in Logan County. Friendship Manor will supply food and refreshments for all guests.

The second forum, on Tuesday, April 30, at The Maple Club, will be about economic issues in Logan County. Again the times are 5 to 7 p.m., and food and beverage will be provided.

These meetings are open to the general public, and anyone who wishes to attend is welcomed. There is no admission charge.

Auditions for summer shows

Lincoln Community Theatre is looking for local talent to sing, dance and act in its summer 2002 productions. Singing and non-singing roles are available.

If auditioning for a role in one of this summer’s musical productions, individuals should have a song prepared. An accompanist will be available. Individuals should also be prepared to learn a few basic dance steps at the audition.

Those auditioning for non-singing roles will be required to do cold readings from the script. Scripts may be viewed at the Lincoln Public Library two weeks prior to each audition. Library scripts may not be removed from the building.

All auditions will be conducted at St. John Church of Christ, 204 Seventh St. in Lincoln.

Production and audition dates are as follows:

•  "Hello, Dolly!"

Performance dates: June 14-22

Auditions:

•  Friday, April 12, 6 p.m.

•  Saturday, April 13, 10 a.m.

•  Sunday, April 14, 2 p.m., callbacks only

You will be asked to sing a song, your choice or one from "Hello, Dolly." You will also be taught a simple dance (you do not need to prepare one). The director is looking in the age range of 25 to 60, but all are welcome to audition.

•  "Dearly Departed"

Performance dates: July 12-20

Auditions:

•  Friday, May 10, 6:30 p.m.

•  Saturday, May 11, 10 a.m.

The director is looking for actors age 20 and above. There will be four to six men, six to eight women, a trio of singers and a part for one teenage girl. There are lots of parts for older mature actors. People auditioning should plan to be there for entire audition session (1˝ to two hours).

 •  "The King and I"

Performance dates: Aug. 2-10

Auditions:

•  Friday, May 31, 6 p.m., adults only

•  Saturday, June 1, 9 a.m., children only (ages 5-14)

•  Saturday, June 1, 1 p.m., adults unable to audition Friday

•  Sunday, June 2, 2 p.m., callbacks only

There are two male child leads. Adult roles include eight men and 11 females. Dancers are also needed. Be prepared to audition with a song showing your vocal range.

‘Treemendous Tree’ Contest

The University of Illinois Master Gardeners in Logan County are sponsoring a "Treemendous Tree" Contest to identify the largest trees for select species in the county. County nominations will be forwarded to the state forester for measurement and state-level competition, if appropriate.

Larry Mayhan, author of "In Search of Big Trees," will be the featured speaker at the information meeting at 7 p.m. on April 30 at the Logan County Extension office.

Trees that are from the listed species and located within Logan County are eligible for consideration in the Treemendous Tree program. Nominations may be made by anyone. Largest trees will be recognized, along with their owners.

Teams needed for Relay For Life

The Logan County Unit of the American Cancer Society is pleased to announce the fifth annual Relay For Life, on April 19-20 at the Lincoln Park District Indoor Sports Complex. The opening ceremony will take place at 8 p.m. on the 19th. A Cancer Survivor Walk will be at 9 a.m. on the 20th, and a luminary and closing ceremony will be at 1 p.m.

The formation of teams is taking place now. Any business, church, school, organization, friends and family groups are welcome to form a team to walk or run in relay fashion. Lincoln Park District notes

 You know summer is coming when it’s time to sign up for baseball and softball. Registrations are still being taken for boys and girls. Teams will be drawn at the end of the month. Men’s and women’s softball registration will close the first Saturday in May.

•  Lincoln Park District will be the host to the Relay for Life.  The Logan County Unit of the American Cancer Society cordially invites you to its fifth annual event celebrating the lives of those who have survived cancer and honoring the memories of those who have not. Relay for Life kicks off Friday, April 19, at 8 p.m., and teams are encouraged to come out, camp all night and enjoy activities.  A survivor walk will take place at different times throughout the day. •  Plans are under way for Post Prom, which will be at the park district facilities on May 18.  The Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs Task Force sponsors the event with support from the Healthy Families Task Force.  Prom-age young people may enjoy a night of fun without the concerns about the presence of alcohol, tobacco or drugs.  Games, DJ, pizza,
and a magician are slated to be just a part of
the night.

•  For those of you who don’t enjoy working out in the summer heat, we encourage you to join us for aerobics. All of our classes are in a private, air-conditioned room. We will even let you use our showers so you can leave after your workout as fresh and clean as when you came in. Aerobics schedules with class descriptions on the back are available at the front and back desks.  If you have any questions, call us at 732-8770 between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday.  On Sunday our office staff is available from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.


Oasis update

The Oasis, Logan County’s senior citizen center, at 501 Pulaski St. in Lincoln, is open weekdays (except holidays) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The center also is open on Friday and Sunday nights for table games. Dominic Dalpoas is the executive director. Activities are open to all Logan County senior citizens, regardless of membership.

Bingo games and nutrition

Join us Thursday at 1 p.m. for bingo sponsored by the University of Illinois Extension Service. Prizes are nutritious fruits, vegetables and snacks.

Social Security

Reminder: The Social Security representative does not regularly schedule service at The Oasis on the second Thursday of the month. Please call the Springfield office at 1 (217) 241-6651 for an appointment.

Computer classes

The computer classes have resumed with a regular weekly schedule from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Call 732-6132 for a reservation for computer basics, word processing, e-mail and Internet, or spreadsheet and database. The course fee is only $15.

Memories class

Please join our current students to learn writing skills for preserving family memories. The class will meet this month on Friday, April 19, starting at 3:45 p.m.

SHARE food distribution

Your SHARE food orders may be picked up and next month’s orders placed this Friday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. This special program is sponsored by the diocese of Peoria for anyone who wishes to participate.

IGA steak sale

Join us at IGA from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 20, for the spring fund-raiser for The Oasis. There will be steak sandwiches, drinks and a lot of fun.

The Oasis van and representative will be in the Logan County communities April 23 to assist with applications for property tax, pharmaceutical drugs and driver’s license cost reductions. YMCA news

YMCA tumbling

The Lincoln Area YMCA has been offering tumbling classes for over a year now. The Y offers preschool tumbling for children ages 3-4, and beginner tumbling for those 5 and up.

Ashlee Kirk has taught this class since its beginning. Ashlee teaches the participants somersaults, cartwheels, back bends and more advanced tumbling moves as the children progress. Character development is also a part of this program. Through the character development aspect, the children learn about caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Lincoln Area YMCA 2002 summer day camps

YMCA summer day camp is the right choice to make when looking for fun and adventure for kids throughout the summer months. Mom and Dad can simply go to work each day knowing that their children will share hours of fun with their friends in a safe environment. Kids will fill their time at the Y this summer by enjoying lots of field trip fun, including swimming, ice skating, roller skating, hiking in area parks, a try at fishing, climbing on the YMCA low ropes course, archery, and visits to a water park, the Decatur Children’s Museum and the golf range at Lincoln Park District.

Children will enjoy the qualified and fun-loving YMCA staff as they play games and guide the children in various educational activities. Activities planned include singing camp songs, experiencing outdoor activities such as hikes in area parks, learning to tie knots, making special snacks, enjoying visits from guest speakers, playing various sports, and having special contest fun with entertaining "kid" games such as jacks, marbles, yo-yos, hula hoops, hacky sacks, Slinkies, spinning tops and much more. Children will also enjoy group arts and crafts, reading activities, storytelling fun, creative drama activities, skits, and will swim most days that weather permits.

Summer day camp will be offered at the following locations this year:

•  Children entering kindergarten to second grade — YMCA facility and outdoor grounds on Wyatt Avenue

•  Third through sixth grade — Immanuel Lutheran Church outdoor picnic grounds (1409 Pulaski St.)

•  Kindergarten through sixth-grade program for Atlanta — Atlanta Grade School


YMCA has Fun Days when school is out

"School’s Out Fun Days," offered by the local YMCA, are just the right answer for both parents and their children ages kindergarten through sixth grade. Parents can preregister their children to attend these special days and go to work knowing that the children will be kept busy and safe on days when school is not in session.

Kids especially enjoy their day off from school, as they have lots of opportunity to socialize and play games with their school friends. Youngsters will also enjoy the benefits of a variety of planned special activities and lessons at each Fun Day. Some of the special activities are singing fun songs, enjoying story time, experiencing science lessons, art activities and lots of fun large-motor play. Various guest speakers visit from time to time to share healthy nutrition programs and other interesting information with the children.

All of the School’s Out Fun Days are at the YMCA activity center, 721 Wyatt Ave.
