Alcohol and tobacco vendors thanked

2-1-02

To the editor:

There were over 40 people representing area businesses at Thursday evening’s alcohol and tobacco vendors class at the Lincoln Police Department.

The Lincoln Police Department, along with the Secretary of State Police, "We Card" and the Illinois Liquor Control Commission, would like to thank the businesses who came to the alcohol and tobacco vendors class. Their attendance showed that they are concerned about preventing minors from buying alcohol and tobacco products. Thank you.

Tim Butterfield

Community Policing Officer

Thanks from Salvation Army

1-31-02

Dear Editor:

On behalf of the Logan Salvation Army, I would like to express my thanks to all of the people who dropped their donations into the kettles or mailed them to my office to make the 2001 Christmas Kettle Campaign a success! The final, closing total is $24,260.55! At the beginning of the bell ringing season, it was not looking as if we were going to be able to celebrate that kind of total. But thanks to faithful bell ringers and faithful, generous contributors, the amount kept slowly climbing!

Thank you to all of my volunteer bell ringers for facing the cold winds and rain (We didn’t have any snow!) and making some noise for the Logan County Salvation Army! I especially want to say a special thank you to the Lincoln Rotary Club. They, with the coordinating efforts of Mr. Joseph Runyon, rang for the Salvation Army on three separate occasions at Wal-Mart. You guys really went above and beyond. I am so grateful to you all!

Thank you, Becky Heyen, Susan Jones and Alice Cheatham, for toughing it out for the entire campaign! Every year I embark upon a new Christmas Kettle Campaign with hopes for it to be a success, and every year I realize all over again that there is no way it can be without all of the giving people on both sides of the kettle. Thank you all, and may God bless you!

Sincerely,

Curtis Sutterfield

Service Center Director

New Holland-Middletown School teachers respond

1-30-02

Dear Editor:

We the undersigned would like to take issue with the article regarding the New Holland-Middletown School District 88 which appeared in the Jan. 19, 2002, edition of The Courier.

A few disgruntled individuals leveled several unfounded accusations of child abuse and neglect against our administration and school. School employees are mandated reporters required by state law to report incidents of possible and probable abuse to children. We resent the implications made by these individuals and The Courier that we would stand aside and allow these alleged abusive behaviors to occur.

We abhor the compilation of unrelated facts into an attack on our school district and communities. It seems to us that articles published in The Courier consistently and unfairly criticize our school.

Our graduates, both past and present, succeed and excel at Lincoln High School as well as students from any of the other feeder schools. Our former students are well represented throughout the work force and institutions of higher learning.

What a pleasure it would be for our school to be recognized by The Courier and its staff for the positive achievements we have attained.

Thanks and a Valentine’s Day invitation

1-24-02

To the editor:

The Logan County Arts Association would like to thank everyone who enjoyed the swashbuckling adventures of "Robin Hood" on the silver screen.

Our offerings would not be possible without the kind assistance of the GKC Corporation.

We look forward to seeing everyone on Valentine’s Day for "It Happened One Night." Bring your sweetheart, cuddle up with a box of popcorn, and enjoy.

Marshall H. Jacobs

President
