LDC parents in Champaign want to keep facility open

7-5-02

To the editor:

As parents/guardians of residents at Lincoln Developmental Center, we are fighting to keep LDC open. Residents at LDC are developmentally disabled and have complicated medical/behavioral needs. These needs generally cannot be met in a community setting.

Recent newspaper/TV reports have characterized LDC as a place where incidents of neglect/abuse occur. What the reports don’t say is that similar incidents occur in community homes and other state-operated facilities in many cases more frequently than at Lincoln. We don’t condone negligence; but we realize when you are dealing with complicated behaviors, incidents will happen. Our own experiences with having our loved ones at Lincoln have been positive.

Residents of Champaign and neighboring communities/counties should be aware that LDC is the only state-operated developmental facility in east-central Illinois. No family knows when they will need the services of a state-operated developmental facility. Most of us visit our loved ones frequently and would have to drive great distances if Lincoln closes.

Most of the votes to close LDC came from Chicago-area senators. Our own Sen. Stan Weaver voted to keep LDC open.

The family of Ryan J. Donley would like to extend our deepest appreciation for your countless prayers and expressions of sympathy given to our family during our loss of Ryan. We have found much comfort in the countless cards, flowers, calls, visits, donations and gifts of the heart. Many of you we know personally, many we do not. It is wonderful to see so many caring people willing to help in any way that they can when you need it. When your whole life has been devastated, it is reassuring to see such human kindness in this day and age. It certainly gives you hope that tomorrow will be brighter. I don’t know how we would have made it through such a difficult time without all of you. You are our blessings from God.

Love,

Daphne Donley
