Election opportunity to change government

To the editor:

It is time for Lincoln city voters to regain control of Lincoln city government and make for constructive change.

We believe now is the perfect time to make this change in our city government by electing new city aldermen. We have new candidates for city alderman in four of the five contested wards in the city of Lincoln. We are asking for help from all Lincoln city voters in the primary election on Tuesday, Feb. 25, to elect new aldermen in each of our city wards. We believe, by electing new city aldermen, we can then bring a new and more reasonable approach to solving Lincoln's problems, instead of the present approach of raising taxes and fees for most city services. By these city aldermen having refused to accept the one-sided defeat of their sales tax proposal by Lincoln city voters last November and because they are trying again in April of this year to cram this tax down our throats again, we believe they have demonstrated they will not accept the will of the voters, and so we must replace them.

In our ward, Ward 2, we see Alderman Steve Fuhrer as the main target to be replaced, because of his refusal to obey and accept the wishes of the voters who elected him. He has led the fight in City Hall for every one of the fee and tax increases during his term, except the fee increase that would have increased his liquor license at the Blue Dog Tavern in downtown Lincoln, owned by him and his wife. He lobbied and got the other tavern owners downtown to protest against the city liquor license fee increases that had not been raised for many years, and he was successful in its defeat. He also lobbied for extended operating hours for downtown taverns, and once again he was successful.

[to top of second column in this article]

If you are against higher taxes, higher city water bills, higher city sewer fees and the sales tax increase that will remove from $600,000 to $800,000 from Lincoln residents and then be passed on to your children and grandchildren, then do not re-elect Alderman Steve

Fuhrer. Please help us elect his opponent, Steve Mesner, as our new city alderman in Ward 2.

Steve Mesner has stated that he is opposed to the city sales tax increase and has promised to cut $600,000 from the budget. Steve Mesner deserves this chance now to cut the excess fat out of the city budget. Mesner previously served Ward 2 with honor and deserves to get his alderman's job back from Fuhrer.

In our opinion, Alderman Steve Fuhrer wants to be re-elected alderman to protect the Blue Dog Tavern from higher license fees and maintain the extended hours.

Should Lincoln city aldermen be protecting the downtown taverns from higher license fees and granting longer operating hours? Is this really good for Lincoln city residents? I don't think so.

We can not continue to re-elect the same city aldermen and expect different results.

It is time to elect new aldermen and new blood. The time for change is now. Please help us build a new, stronger and streamlined Lincoln city government.
