Grace Hamm

Grace A. Hamm, 88, of Mount Pulaski died Saturday (June 7, 2003) at 1:10 a.m. at St. John's Hospital North in Springfield.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday and her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, both at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski. Bill Shanle and John Robertson will officiate at the service.

Burial will be in Mount Pulaski Cemetery.

Mrs. Hamm was a farm owner and manager and an elementary and secondary school teacher in Mount Pulaski.

She was born Sept. 3, 1914, in Mount Pulaski to John and Clara Mitchell Rothwell. She married Dr. Robert N. Hamm in Mount Pulaski on July 5, 1941. He preceded her in death.

Surviving are two sons, Dr. Robert Hamm of Washington, D.C., and John (and Racquel) Hamm of Rochester; three daughters, Mary Kathleen (and Paul) Ridings of Huntsville, Texas, Linda Lee (and Dick) Kenyon of Chicago and Diane Lynn (and Ron) Cohen of Jacksonville, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Michael Joseph Helow, Mary Grace Lynch, Karen Ann Kenyon, Jennifer Heather Kenyon, Christopher Robert Kenyon, Andrew Lee Hamm and Nathan Joseph Ridings; and one great-grandchild.

She was also preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Mount Pulaski, PTA president, den leader for Cub Scouts and a member of Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was a student pilot, golfer and tennis player. She was the first teacher in Mount Pulaski to wear bobby socks. Her humor was evident in her impersonations and readings. The entire community enjoyed her beautiful gardens.

Memorials may be made to St. John's Hospital North in Springfield.

John Meese

John C. Meese Jr., 76, of Lincoln died Friday (June 6, 2003) at 5:30 a.m. at the Veterans Hospital, Indianapolis, Ind.

Inurnment of ashes will be in Zion Cemetery, Lincoln, at a later date.

Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home of Lincoln is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Meese was a retiree from Laborer's Union Local 703.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II.

He was born Nov. 19, 1926, in Tamaroa to John C. and Mary D. Davis Meese Sr. He married Delphine L. Marshalek on May 30, 1964, in Benton. She died Dec. 28, 1998.

Survivors are two daughters, Phyllis (and Ted) Lamers of Olathe, Kan., and Patricia (and Jerry) Lover of Adrian, Mich.; three grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy Cummins of Paducah, Ky.

He was also preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

Memorials may be made to Danville Veterans Hospital or the Indianapolis, Ind., Veterans Hospital.

Walter Behrends

Walter Harold Behrends, 89, of Easton, died Saturday (June 7, 2003) at 7:30 p.m. at Mason City Area Nursing Home.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hurley Funeral Home, 603 E. Chestnut in Mason City.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Lutheran Church in Mason City, with the Rev. Harold Woodworth officiating.

Burial will be in Mason City Cemetery.

Mr. Behrends was a farmer.

He was born June 26, 1913, at Havana to Henry and Anna Glick Behrends. He married Florence C. Behrends on Jan. 13, 1935, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Allens Grove. She died May 31, 2003.

Survivors are three sons, Darwyn (and Roselyn) Behrends of Mason City, Darrel (and Anna Marie) Behrends of Mason City and Joe Behrends of Champaign; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Wayne Behrends of Mason City.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Nelda Graff.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Mason City, Mason County Farm Bureau, soil conservation board, Polled Hereford Breeders and a former member of the Golden Valley School board.

Memorial contributions may be made for handicapped renovations at Christ Lutheran Church in Mason City.


Ansel Bristow

Ansel H. Bristow, 87, of rural McLean died Friday (June 6, 2003) at 11:30 p.m. at the DeWitt County Nursing Home, rural Clinton.

A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Cemetery, Waynesville. The Rev. Rick Bell will officiate. There will be no visitation.

Quiram Funeral Home of Atlanta is handling arrangements.

Mr. Bristow worked at Sampsons in Waynesville several years and farmed in the McLean-Waynesville area.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was born Aug. 4, 1915, at Waynesville to Dallas and Ada Wilson Bristow. He married Biddy Sue Rich on Dec. 27, 1947, at Kenney. She died Dec. 26, 1991.

Survivors are two sons, Gary (and Linda) Bristow of McLean and Ron (and Linda) Bristow of Bloomington; one daughter, Patty (and Phil) Miller of Waynesville; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Reba Holmes of Mount Pulaski, Virginia Bannister of Lincoln and Lois Miller of Witt; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

Memorial contributions may be made to the DeWitt County Nursing Home.


Ruth Conger

Ruth E. Conger, 89, formerly of Mason City, died Thursday (June 5, 2003) at 1:05 p.m. at Villa Health Care East in Sherman.

Cremation rites have been accorded, and burial of ashes will be in Mason City Cemetery. The Rev. Randall Paine will officiate at the graveside service at 1 p.m. Monday. There is no visitation.

Mrs. Conger was a homemaker.

She was born April 23, 1914, in Jacksonville. She married Maxwell Conger, and he preceded her in death.

Survivors are one son, Joseph (and Rose) Smith of Virginia; two daughters, Mary (and William) DiPasquale of Mason City and a stepdaughter, Rochelle (and Bill) Hoelcher of Chatsworth; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was of the Presbyterian faith.

Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's disease research.
