Low-income energy assistance   Send a link to a friend

Notes from Sen. Bill Brady

[OCT. 6, 2003]

Energy assistance program now taking applications from senior citizens, people with disabilities

Illinois households with disabled or elderly members and households that are disconnected from their heat source may now apply for heating assistance from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

LIHEAP is geared to households with incomes up to 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. Monthly income limits are $1,123 for one person, $1,515 for a two-person household and $2,300 for a four-person household. Benefits are provided directly to the household's utility or delivered fuel dealer for households that heat with fuel oil or propane.

The months of September and October are set aside for households with elderly or disabled members and households disconnected from their heat source. All others may begin submitting applications on Nov. 1.

People who wish to apply should contact the local agency in the county where they live or call the toll-free LIHEAP information line at 1 (800) 252-8643.

Brady tapes television show

I taped my first television show Sept. 26 at the CITV 5 studio in Lincoln. The 30-minute show featured Al Bowman, interim president of Illinois State University. We talked about the university, education funding in Illinois and what education communities throughout the state need to do to keep Illinois students in Illinois.

My TV show will be available to viewers with access to CITV 5 and to Insight Communications customers in Bloomington. We are also working to get it on other television stations in other communities. Our goal is to do a monthly show. Watch for it!
