Carl Bartels Jr.

Carl Elmer Bartels Jr., 77, of Emden died Tuesday (April 6, 2004) at 9:50 p.m. at his home.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln. The service will be conducted by Dave Pendley, a director of Christian education. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield.

Mr. Bartels was a foreman from Saint-Gobain Containers before he retired.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946, during World War II.

He was born July 25, 1926, in Manito to Carl Elmer and Martha Marie Miller Bartels Sr. He married Dorothy Swingle in Lincoln on Nov. 25, 1946, and they were later divorced.

He is survived by his life partner, Carol Seaman of Emden; one son, David (and Rita) Bartels of Lincoln; three stepsons, Ron (and Lori) Spencer of Danvers, Tim (and Donna) Spencer of Verona, Wis., and Dale (and Mary Jane) Spencer of Centralia; five grandchildren and five stepgrandchildren; and one great-grandchild and one step-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.

He was a member of Emden American Legion Post 506.

Beverly Heft

Beverly Jean Heft, 77, of Spring Hill, Fla., formerly of Latham, died Sunday (April 4, 2004) at Hernando/Pasco Hospice Care Unit in Brooksville, Fla.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski, with John Robertson officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service.

Burial will be in Lake Bank Cemetery, rural Latham.

Mrs. Heft was a homemaker.

She was born June 6, 1926, at Latham to Frederick and Moneta Jarvis Kiick. She married Eldon Heft in Decatur on Feb. 14, 1948. He preceded her in death.

She is survived by one daughter, Judith (and Clyde) Dewitt of Manassas, Va.; one son, David Heft of Killington, Vt.; five grandchildren; and one sister, Iona (and Dick) Gilman of Latham.

She was of the Methodist faith and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
