[AUG. 3, 2004]  Mayor Beth Davis opened last evening's city business session with a recommendation for new police chief. Saying she felt that it is better to promote from within, she offered to the council 22-year veteran Sgt. Robert Rawlins. The council approved him unanimously at a salary of $52,000 per year.

Chief Rich Montcalm will begin a new job on Aug. 16. He will begin training his replacement in two weeks to take over as of Aug. 15 at 12:01 a.m.

A highly respected member of the police department, Sgt. Rawlins has been strongly active in leadership. He is an original member of the new Emergency Response Team. He volunteer teaches during the police academy sessions.

Rawlins and his wife, Gail, have two children.

LDN will get the future chief's views about what he would like to continue, strengthen or add to the department when he has had some time to consider it.
