Department of Natural Resources magazine celebrates Archaeology Awareness Month     Send a link to a friend

[AUG. 21, 2004]  SPRINGFIELD -- The September issue of Outdoor Illinois, the Department of Natural Resources' monthly magazine, is a celebration of Illinois' rich and varied history. September is Archaeology Awareness Month, and the magazine's cover photograph of the "Peoples of the Past" exhibit at the Illinois State Museum sets the stage for the issue.

Learn how archaeologists, historians and anthropologists help assemble -- and often unearth
-- Illinois' history. Discover some of the mysteries that remain, such as Giant City State Park's stone fort and the prehistoric rock inscriptions found at Piney Creek Ravine Nature Preserve, both continuing to draw scientific attention. Get a glimpse into Illinois' four reconstructed forts and life on the edge when Illinois was wilderness territory.

Outdoor Illinois is a valuable guide to Illinois' natural, cultural and recreational resources at a cost of just $10 for a one-year subscription. Call 1 (800) 720-3249 or visit to subscribe. VISA and MasterCard are accepted.
