[AUG. 31, 2004]  Thursday is the start of the volleyball season for the Lincoln Christian College Angels, with a match versus the University of Alaska at Anchorage. The match is part of a tournament hosted by the University of Alaska. Other teams in the tournament are Harding University and Montana State University.

This season is looking promising, as the entire 2003 starting lineup is returning after winning the NCCAA national championship last year. Starters for the Angels include Christen O'Malley-Owen, 2003 NCCAA Co-Player of the Year; Bethany Harris, member of 2003 Midwest Regional team; Amanda Cole, second team all-American, Lauren Cox, first team all-American; Mindy Crawford, Midwest Libero Player of the Year; Jeni McLaughlin, member of 2003 Midwest Regional team; and Kari McFadden, member of the 2003 national tournament team.

Four varsity middle blockers were added for the 2004 season: Elizabeth Siuda, a transfer from Black Hawk East; Kellie Bartling from Malden High School in Malden, Mo.; Melissa Pim from Glenwood High School; and Emma Hanford from Paxton-Buckley-Loda High School. Two junior varsity players were also added to the team: Jessica Fender from North Clay High School and Jessica Schroeder from Woodlawn High School.

As of 2006, the LCC athletic department has been granted provisional status with the NCAA III. Starting in 2005, they will be members of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In addition to hosting the NCCAA National Volleyball Championship this year, LCC has been selected to host the tournament for the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

The 2004 schedule features matches with one NCAA I school, two NCAA II schools, four NAIA schools and 18 NCAA III schools. "With such a challenging schedule, it will be difficult to repeat the 36-4 record from the 2003 season, but we think by playing such a tough schedule it will make us a better postseason team," said LCC volleyball coach Kevin Crawford.
