All games in the Class 7A state finals
will be played at Divernon. All 16 teams will play first-round games
Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. Quarterfinals are set to begin at 4
p.m. Monday, with semifinals starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The
third-place and championship games are slated for Thursday,
beginning at 6 p.m. See the "Girls Basketball" page at
www.iesa.org for
Class 7A pairings, results and updates as the tournament
progresses. Three of the four
place winners in last year's Class 7A tournament return in 2004, and
all are in the upper bracket. Defending champion Paris Crestwood,
15-4, is seeking its sixth 7A title. Paris Crestwood beat
Springfield Blessed Sacrament 35-16 for the 2003 title. Blessed
Sacrament is 19-4 this year and meets Lewistown Central, 15-5, in
the opening game at 9 a.m. Normal Epiphany, 22-1, was fourth last
year and plays Sidell Jamaica, 15-3, in Saturday's second game at
10:30 a.m. Paris Crestwood faces Louisville North Clay, 14-5, in the
day's third game at noon.
The 16 teams in this year's 7A field
have a combined record of 254-76. There are no unbeaten teams.
Normal Epiphany at 22-1 is the only school with but a single loss.
All the others have at least three losses.
The Class 7AA games will be played
in an experimental format at two sites in Normal: Kingsley Junior
High School and Parkside Junior High School. The experimental format
allows for a later starting time yet earlier ending time for the
first-round games. The teams playing at one site Saturday in the
first round will play their quarterfinal games at the other site.
Four first-round games will be played at each site Saturday,
beginning at 11 a.m. Two quarterfinal games will be played at both
sites Monday at 5 p.m. Both the semifinal session and finals session
will be played at Kingsley Junior High School. Semifinal games begin
at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The third-place game is set for 6 p.m. and the
championship game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday. See the
"Girls Basketball" page at
www.iesa.org for
Class 7AA pairings, results and updates as the tournament
progresses.
Defending champion Chatham Glenwood
(18-3) is joined by five unbeaten teams and four once-beaten teams
in the Class AA field. Chatham Glenwood opens defense of its title
Saturday at 2 p.m. against Champaign Franklin (11-8) at Parkside.
Chatham Glenwood beat Taylorville Junior High 46-19 last year to
become the 30th unbeaten champion in IESA girls basketball history.
There have been eight unbeaten champions in 7AA and seven in 7A. The
combined won-loss record of the Class AA field is a staggering
291-37. Only three of the teams in the field have more than three
losses -- Phoenix Coolidge at 12-10, Rochester at 16-6 and Champaign
Franklin at 11-8. The unbeaten teams are Joliet Washington, 23-0;
Teutopolis, 21-0; Normal Kingsley, 19-0; Toledo Cumberland, 22-0;
and perennial power Canton Ingersoll, 23-0. Normal Kingsley battles
Toledo Cumberland at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Parkside. Four of the
five unbeaten teams play Saturday at Parkside.
Four of the schools in the Class AA
field have won the 7AA state championship since the two-class system
went into effect in 1990. Chatham Glenwood was champion in 2000 and
2003, Canton Ingersoll won in 2002, Teutopolis was the 2001 winner,
and Phoenix Coolidge won in 1990.
