[DEC. 9, 2004]  SPRINGFIELD -- Deer hunters across Illinois have another opportunity to harvest a deer during the state's muzzleloader season, set for Dec. 10-12. Hunters are reminded that only muzzleloader permits are valid for this upcoming season, and only legal muzzleloaders may be used. Unfilled firearm season permits are not valid for the muzzleloader season.

"We want to remind archery hunters that deer may also be harvested with bow and arrow during the muzzleloader season," said Illinois Department of Natural Resources Director Joel Brunsvold. "Archery hunters also need to be aware that they are required to wear their blaze orange clothing while hunting with archery equipment in counties open to muzzleloader hunting and youth hunting."

Last year 14,498 either-sex permits and 1,689 antlerless-only permits were issued, and 3,037 deer were harvested, for a success rate of 19 percent.
