[DEC. 31, 2004]  CHICAGO -- In the wake of Sunday's catastrophic tsunami in South Asia, Gov. Blagojevich expressed his gratitude to the thousands of Illinoisans who contacted his office looking for ways to help the victims. While there is no state-sponsored relief fund, the governor urged Illinois citizens to seek out reputable charities and assistance funds.

"This is a tragic disaster of epic proportions that has affected all of our lives," Gov. Blagojevich said. "Numerous legitimate charitable organizations have set up special relief funds, and I encourage all Illinois citizens to support their efforts as best they can."

The death toll from the tsunami has risen to over 100,000 people, devastating entire communities and leaving thousands without adequate food, safe water and shelter. Numerous nations, international organizations and charities have begun massive relief efforts to assist the victims and prevent further damage.

Hundreds of Illinois citizens have contacted the governor's office to locate reputable charities that are directly assisting the victims in South Asia. The following is a list of charities accepting donations for the tsunami relief effort, many of which have local chapters in Illinois.
