Gov. Blagojevich encourages Illinois citizens
to help victims of the South Asian tsunami

CHICAGO -- In the wake of
Sunday's catastrophic tsunami in South Asia, Gov. Blagojevich
expressed his gratitude to the thousands of Illinoisans who
contacted his office looking for ways to help the victims. While
there is no state-sponsored relief fund, the governor urged Illinois
citizens to seek out reputable charities and assistance funds.

"This is a tragic disaster of epic
proportions that has affected all of our lives," Gov. Blagojevich
said. "Numerous legitimate charitable organizations have set up
special relief funds, and I encourage all Illinois citizens to
support their efforts as best they can."
The death toll from the tsunami has
risen to over 100,000 people, devastating entire communities and
leaving thousands without adequate food, safe water and shelter.
Numerous nations, international organizations and charities have
begun massive relief efforts to assist the victims and prevent
further damage.
Hundreds
of Illinois citizens have contacted the governor's office to locate
reputable charities that are directly assisting the victims in South
Asia. The following is a list of charities accepting donations for
the tsunami relief effort, many of which have local chapters in
Illinois.
