Mixed precipitation will affect central Illinois this afternoon into tonight     Send a link to a friend

[FEB. 2, 2003]  A low-pressure area will move from southwest Missouri to southern Wisconsin during the afternoon and into early this evening. A mixture of freezing rain, sleet and snow is anticipated before the precipitation changes to all snow.

For the counties of Cass, Christian, DeWitt, Logan, Macon, McLean, Menard, Morgan, Sangamon and Scott, including the cities of Bloomington, Decatur, Jacksonville, Lincoln, Springfield and Taylorville:

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Freezing rain and sleet will give way to rain as slightly warmer temperatures move into central Illinois early this afternoon. As colder air filters into the region late this afternoon and early this evening, rain will change back to a mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow before changing to all snow. Snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are expected by late tonight.

Conditions can deteriorate rapidly in winter weather situations. Slow down and allow extra time when traveling. Practice your winter safety rules and keep a flashlight, food and water in your car in case of emergency.

For the counties of Fulton, Knox, Marshall, Mason, Peoria, Schuyler, Stark, Tazewell and Woodford, including the cities of Galesburg, Havana and Peoria:

The National Weather Service has issued an advisory, and a winter weather advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Freezing rain and sleet can be expected along and west of the Illinois River much of this afternoon. The mixed precipitation may briefly change to all rain for a short time this afternoon. Snow is expected to mix in with the precipitation by late afternoon, switching to all snow by evening. Total snow accumulations will mainly range from 1 to 3 inches, with up to 4 inches possible toward Galesburg.

For the counties of Champaign, Clark, Coles, Cumberland, Douglas, Edgar, Moultrie, Piatt, Shelby and Vermilion, including the cities of Champaign, Danville, Mattoon and Shelbyville: 

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Light freezing rain can be expected north of a line from Tuscola to Paris early this afternoon. Slightly warmer air will filter into the region early in the afternoon, resulting in a change to rain. As colder air returns to the region late this afternoon and early this evening, the rain will switch back to a mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow. During the evening hours the precipitation will change to all snow. Total snow accumulations will be around 1 inch by late tonight.
