[FEB. 21, 2004]  SPRINGFIELD -- State Sen. Larry Bomke presented a Gold Star license plate bill (Senate Bill 2453) suggested by Bill and Alvora Sandidge of Pawnee. The Sandidges want Gold Star license plates included in the discounts offered by the Circuit Breaker program, and Bomke is sponsoring the bill to authorize the discount.

Currently, participants in the Circuit Breaker program may apply for discounts for standard car, truck or disabled plates, plates for recreational vehicles, or Korean War or Purple Heart license plates. Senate Bill 2453 would also include license plates for Gold Star recipients under the Circuit Breaker discount. Gold Star plates are offered to the surviving spouse of Illinois residents who have been awarded the Gold Star, or the surviving parent (if there is no spouse) or sibling (if there is no surviving parent).

Senate Bill 2453 gained unanimous approval in committee Thursday and now awaits action by the full Senate.

Life Sentence, No Parole

If we tried to invent the cruelest punishment for dogs, we probably couldn't come up with anything worse than "solitary confinement" on a chain or in a kennel.

Dogs are pack animals who crave the companionship of others.  Scratches behind the ears, games of fetch, or even just walks around the block mean the world to them.  Curling up at your feet while you watch TV is their idea of heaven.

Many dogs left to fend for themselves at the end of a chain fall prey to attacks by other animals or cruel people, and many others are injured or hanged or choke as a result of getting entangled or caught in their tether.

If you have a backyard dog, please, bring him or her inside.  They don't want much--just you.
