St. John United Church of Christ members attend Illinois conference [JUNE 26, 2004] T he 40th anniversary of the Illinois Conference of the United Church of Christ met on the Elmhurst College campus in Elmhurst recently.
Michelle Johnson and Heather Goetsch of St. John United Church of Christ in Lincoln stand with the banner they carried in the parade of over 100 banners from the participating churches at the opening worship service. Under the theme of "From a Firm Foundation Our Future Flows," special speakers were the Rev. Dr. W. Sterling Cary, conference minister emeritus; the Rev. Dr. John Thomas, general minister president of the United Church of Christ; and the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright, pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. During the business meeting, the gathering voted to create a partnership with the Evangelical Congregational Church of Angola. Several delegates from Angola were present to participate in the meeting and to be recognized following the vote. Representing St. John United Church of Christ in Lincoln were youth delegates Lois Leonard and Heather Goetsch. Also attending from the Lincoln church were Michelle Johnson, the Rev. Richard Reinwald, and the Rev. Wallace and Tonita Reifsteck. [News release]
First Baptist summer social [JUNE 24, 2004] First Baptist Church, 101 Broadway St. in Lincoln, is having its annual summer social July 1 from 4:30 to 7 p.m., with a pie auction at 6 p.m. The menu features pulled pork barbecue sandwiches, chips, coleslaw or chunky applesauce, desserts, and drinks. Carryouts will be available. People attending the social and pie auction are asked to use the Ottawa Street rear entrance, which is across from Central School and is handicapped-accessible. Tickets will be available at the door or may be purchased in advance at the church office on weekday mornings; from Judy Awe, phone 732-4758; from Donna Spiker at the Holiday Inn Express; or from Bev Bowns at the main branch of the State Bank of Lincoln. Donations are $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Proceeds will be used for expenses related to an August mission trip to the Anadarko Christian Center in Oklahoma.
