[MARCH 6, 2004]  SPRINGFIELD -- Girl Scouts, Land of Lincoln Council will celebrate the history and future of Girl Scouting March 7-13. Plans are in place for special Girl Scout Week events, including Girl Scout birthday parties and "The Great Diaper Drive" project, which includes the collection of various baby supplies to benefit local women and children's shelters.

"During Girl Scout Week we renew our commitment to making sure every girl in the Land of Lincoln Council has the opportunity to grow strong and realize their own potential," said Sue Clark, CEO of Girl Scouts, Land of Lincoln Council.

Girl Scout Week commemorates the 1912 founding of Girl Scouting in the United States by Juliette Gordon Low. In the 92 years since, the organization has helped shape the lives of more than 50 million women.

Girl Scouting cultivates values, social conscience and self-esteem in young girls, while teaching them critical life skills to later succeed as adults. Membership continues to grow as more and more girls take advantage of the unique all-girl environment.
