Possible telephone scams target seniors     Send a link to a friend

[MARCH 19, 2004]  The Lincoln Police Department has been made aware of possible criminal activity, or "scams," in the Lincoln and Logan County area. This criminal activity is targeting the senior citizen population in our area and can be very costly to the victims.

It has been noted that senior citizens are receiving telephone calls from people requesting a donation for a wide variety of reasons. The donation amounts are small -- $3, $5, $8, $10 amounts -- but have been very costly to the victims. When a donation has been made, the caller requests that only initials be placed on the check, with no other names. Callers are also asking for donations by automatic withdrawals.

The Lincoln Police Department is advising residents that this activity is suspicious but has not been classified as a scam. We would encourage residents to investigate all donation requests before giving a donation.
