Celebration planned for returning soldiers  Send a link to a friend

[MAY 14, 2004]  The families and friends of Decatur's 1-106th Unit of the Illinois Army National Guard are asking for ideas and donations for a "welcome home" celebration being planned for the 1-106ths return home from Iraq in 2005. The unit left Decatur on Jan. 4 for an 18-month deployment. Many of the soldiers and families are from many areas of the state.

The community support for the soldiers and their families during the rally as the 1-106th left Decatur in January was tremendous. The group's goal for the next year is to encourage patriotism and support for our troops and to recruit even more individuals and community businesses to become involved in organizing the celebration to welcome our soldiers back home as they return from their long mission in Iraq. Fund-raisers have already been planned, but more are needed to reach the group's goal.

Individuals may show their support by picking up a magnetic yellow ribbon for their cars at both Decatur Mail Boxes Etc. locations, 4837 U.S. Route 36 East at Airport Plaza and 303 E. Pershing Road, for a donation of $5. Another source is Jordan's Mobil in Elmwood. Magnets will be sold at Peoria Sam's Club on June 25 and 26 and at the Rockford Sam's Club on July 9 and 10.

The Moweaqua IGA will host a fund-raiser on July 2 and 3 from noon to 5 p.m. Rib-eye sandwiches will be sold, with all proceeds donated to the Welcome Home Fund.

There will be a bake sale at Northland Mall in Sterling on June 15 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Treasures for Troops program: Lincoln Land Red Cross is doing a collection drive. The community of Walnut is also doing a collection drive. Please call (217) 761-3132 if your community or business would like to sponsor a collection drive.

A gift of $25 for the Adopt-A-Soldier program will allow the group to present each soldier with a $50 U.S. Savings Bond.

All donations to the Welcome Home Fund or the Adopt-A-Soldier program are tax deductible and may be dropped off or mailed to Family Network, Attention Kelly Rund, Decatur Armory, 5550 Ocean Trail Drive, Decatur, IL 62521.  Individuals who want to get involved or businesses that would like to provide or promote a fund-raiser may call Rund at (217) 761-3132.
