Health department to administer
vaccine phase two

The Logan County Health
Department will begin giving flu vaccine to high-risk populations in
the second phase of vaccinations, scheduled to begin on Monday, Nov.
15. |

"Due to the national shortage of
flu vaccine and distribution problems associated with the shortage,
conducting vaccine clinics using a phase approach has been
required," said Mark Hilliard, administrator of the local health
department. "The approximate
2,500 doses available for this second phase of vaccinations should
be more than sufficient to meet the need of the high-risk
populations in Logan County," says Margie Harris, director of
nursing at the health department.
The Logan County Health Department
will give flu vaccine to high-risk populations meeting the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention requirements when distribution
begins on Monday, Nov. 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and continuing
from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, Nov. 16-19. People
are asked not to come early and stand out in poor weather.
The cost of the flu vaccine is $18
or free with Medicaid or Medicare coverage. Clients are asked to
bring their Medicaid or Medicare card with them at the time of
vaccination. Only patients screened as high-risk according to CDC
guidelines will be vaccinated during this second phase of
distribution.

The following are the priority
groups for vaccination in this phase and are considered to be of
equal importance:
- All children aged 6-23 months.
- Adults aged 65 years and older.
- People ages 2-64 years with
underlying chronic medical conditions (must have a physician’s
statement to that effect).
- All women who will be pregnant
during the influenza season.
- Residents of nursing homes and
long-term care facilities.
- Children ages 6 months to 18
years who are on long-term aspirin therapy.
- Health-care workers involved in
direct patient care.
- Out-of-home caregivers and
household contacts of children younger than 6 months old.
Clients who come to the health
department to be vaccinated and do not meet the CDC eligibility
guidelines will be turned away. For additional or updated
