The top award-winners in the major
award categories are as follows:
1. Rachael Tibbs, participating in
animal science, was selected to receive the highest honor in a
4-H'er's career. Because of her outstanding 4-H career and her
excellent job with her 4-H records, she was selected as Illinois
delegate to the 2004 National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Ga., later
this month!
2. Martin Oltmanns won the 4-H Key
Award, the highest 4-H award given. The qualifications are to be 16
years of age, have a minimum of three years of 4-H membership,
submit a 4-H story and meet nine other requirements as verified by
the leader.
3. Some 4-H'ers are chosen each year
in special award categories. They are listed below. A book is
presented to 4-H'ers with outstanding work, quantity, quality,
years, citizenship, leadership, participation, skill acquisition and
growth. The books are given in three age categories: 8-11 years of
age, 12-14 and 14-19. A Blue Award is given to 4-H'ers deserving of
repeat recognition in a category. Medal awards in the 14-19 age
category are nationally sponsored and may be received only once in
each curriculum area.

The highest honor a club in this
county can receive is to be chosen as Logan County Club of the Year,
and this year's honored club has demonstrated outstanding enthusiasm
and participation within the county. The Middletown 4-Hers have been
very busy this year. They've had a community blood drive;
trick-or-treating for canned goods, which were then donated to the
food pantry; Christmas caroling at the Christian Nursing Home and
donations of cookies and Christmas cards to every resident; county
window display; May baskets for the senior citizens; Senior Citizen
Luncheon and Awards Day; and their Washington, D.C., club trip. They
have had several fund-raisers, including a Kathryn Beich Candies
sale, Thorntons gas cards, nut sale, garage sale and Pizza Hut. They
also donated Christmas presents to a needy family.
