The October recipient, April Gum, is pursuing an associate in arts

Faculty members nominate students for the Student Spotlight award
during the academic year. Academic achievement is a major component
in the selection process, but other criteria are also considered,
including participation and leadership in college activities and
other noteworthy accomplishments. Past recipients of the honor
include a published author, a community leader, the president of the
LCN Theatre Troupe and the valedictorians of the two degree programs
at LCN. A committee of faculty members and administrators considers
the recommendations and selects one student each month during the
academic year.

Fully accredited by the North Central Association, Lincoln
College-Normal serves both traditional full-time residential
students and returning adult students wishing to complete a degree.
Since 1979 Lincoln College-Normal has helped prepare students by
providing high-quality academic opportunities and personalized
attention. Students benefit from the small-school atmosphere but
also have access to many services at Illinois State University,
including health care, library access, recreation and career
counseling.
In 1996, the college opened apartment-style residential housing
for students, which provides campus life experiences that complement
the academic experience. All housing units are fully furnished
suites with four private bedrooms and include kitchen, living room
and laundry as well as high-speed Internet access, local phone and
cable.
In 2001, Lincoln College received additional accreditation from
the North Central Association and began offering two baccalaureate
degrees, the bachelor of arts degree in liberal arts and the
bachelor of science degree in business management. The first
students to earn their bachelor’s degree at Lincoln College-Normal
graduated in 2002.

Life Sentence, No Parole
If we tried to invent the
cruelest punishment for dogs, we probably couldn't come up
with anything worse than "solitary confinement" on a chain or
in a kennel.
Dogs are pack animals who
crave the companionship of others. Scratches behind the ears,
games of fetch, or even just walks around the block mean the
world to them. Curling up at your feet while you watch TV is
their idea of heaven.
Many dogs left to fend for
themselves at the end of a chain fall prey to attacks by other
animals or cruel people, and many others are injured or hanged
or choke as a result of getting entangled or caught in their
tether.
If you have a backyard dog,
please, bring him or her inside. They don't want much--just
you.
