[NOV. 22, 2004]  WICHITA, Kan. -- Clint Wombles, a sophomore member of the Lincoln College cross country team, became the first runner in LC history to compete in the NJCAA 1/2 Marathon National Championships here Sunday.  A total of 61 runners were entered in the competition, and Wombles came home with a 15th-place finish.

Wombles, from Rockford, ran the 13.1-mile course in 1:15.35. Calvin Fife of Mesa Community College in Arizona won the race in a time of 1:11.02.

Lincoln College cross country coach Erin Verbeck said: "This was the second half marathon Clint has run in his career. He ran three minutes faster than his previous best time. Five runners finished ahead of Clint, less than 30 seconds, showing how close the race was run. Clint met his goal and ran an awesome race for not really training for this distance."
