Thanksgiving devotion
[NOV. 24, 2004] W hat is really important in this life?In the Boer War, British Gen. Charles Warren had the enemy outnumbered at the Battle of Spion Kop. Then he wasted 26 hours personally directing the troops committed to the vital mission of ferrying the general's baggage across the river. By then, Boer reinforcements had arrived, and Warren's troops were decimated. No reports on casualties among Warren's luggage. In another similar story, English explorer John Franklin led 129 men across the vast ice of the Arctic territory in the 1800s. His crew lugged around a clothes brush, a tin of button polish, a backgammon board and books. They neglected to bring along their rifles, with which they could have shot game. Instead, they all starved to death. What is the common link of these two stories besides British men who don't know how to pack? The common link is that neither of these men understood what was truly important. They busied themselves with worthless baggage and neglected the very issues of life and death that they were confronted with. "Therefore since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." -- Hebrews 12:1 How many of us are going through this life focused on the wrong things? We neglect the things that are truly important for the sake of those things that don't make a bit of difference in the long run. We give ourselves totally over to material pursuits and neglect a more meaningful spiritual walk. This month as you and
your family gather for Thanksgiving, ask yourself if you are caring
more about your luggage than your life. What is really important in
this life? [From the Prairieland Christian Church newsletter] Send your church announcements and articles to ldneditor@lincolndailynews.com.
