“We are delighted that Illinois citizens and visitors to the state
will continue to enjoy the outstanding sport fishing, waterfowl
hunting, wildlife watching and other recreation opportunities at
Heidecke Lake,” Illinois Department of Natural Resources Director
Joel Brunsvold said. “Midwest Generation and IDNR recognize the
important recreational asset we have in Heidecke Lake, and we look
forward to continuing our long-standing partnership in providing a
great outdoor experience there.” Representatives from the
Department of Natural Resources and Midwest Generation will meet
during the coming months to negotiate a new long-term agreement
through which the department will continue to manage recreation on
and around Heidecke Lake.

The lake, which draws fishing enthusiasts from around the
Midwest, is stocked every year with hybrid striped bass, striped
bass, muskie, tiger muskie, walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth
bass, channel catfish and crappie. There are also several hunting
programs visitors can take advantage of at Heidecke State Fish and
Wildlife Area, which include waterfowl, archery deer and firearm
deer hunting.
“This is great news for those who enjoy fishing and hunting,
especially in northeast Illinois, where public access to outdoor
recreation is extremely important and much in demand,” Brunsvold
added. “We salute Midwest Generation for agreeing to work with the
department to keep Heidecke Lake open for public use.”
