Lynx run at Edwardsville     Send a link to a friend

[OCT. 13, 2004]  EDWARDSVILLE -- Freshman Mike Verre finished 65th to lead the Lincoln College men's cross country team in the SIU-Edwardsville Border Wars cross country meet here this past weekend. Verre ran the 8K course in 27:18.

Following Verre for the Lynx were Clint Wombles in 27:43, good for 80th place, and Craig Frederiksen in a time of 28:11.

"Mike ran a gutsy race and ran out of steam at the end," Lincoln coach Erin Verbeck said. "That last portion of the race will come at the end of the year for Mike. Craig and Clint raced well despite a few physical aches and pains during the race.

"Only four junior colleges entered the competition with 29 teams in the field. We did not run full teams due to some injuries.

"Among the women, Anita (Swift) has really been coming on strong in practices the past week, and we were pleased with the way she came through on a tougher course."

Jazzii Echols finished 138th of 255 runners on the women's side with a time of 21:13 over the 5K course. Swift finished with a time of 21:21, a new personal best.

"Next week we race at Millikin University and we should have the majority of our team back and look to race some fast times on a great course," Verbeck continued. "We are gearing up for regionals and nationals, and nothing we do really matters until then."
