Chamber breakfast addresses keys to big success in small towns     

[SEPT. 24, 2004]  The public is invited to attend a Community Leaders' Breakfast on Tuesday, Oct. 5, to learn more about Logan County's potential to prosper. The event, organized by the Lincoln/Logan County Chamber of Commerce, begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Maple Club.

Jack Schultz, author of "Boomtown USA: The 7½ Keys to Big Success in Small Towns," will share his extensive research on small-town health and prosperity as he addresses these issues: What separates thriving towns from struggling ones? Do the people within a prosperous town approach their lives differently than those in a struggling town? Can communities that are struggling rebound? If so, how?

Mark Hughes, president of the chamber board of directors, heard Schultz speak during a similar event and was impressed by his insights. "Jack's message is educational, inspirational and motivational -- a combination community leaders will not want to miss," says Hughes, owner of Inland Tool in Mount Pulaski, a prime sponsor of the breakfast.

Schultz, who holds a master's degree in business from Harvard, is the CEO of Agracel Inc., an industrial development firm in Effingham. He maintains that one of the hurdles small-town America must get over to succeed is its propensity to sit with the status quo. "If you let the citizens against virtually everything take control of the community's agenda, your community will be taking a step back, not forward," Schultz was quoted recently as saying.

Reservations are required to attend the event and can be made by calling 735-2385. A donation for the buffet breakfast is encouraged and will be collected at the door.
