MIDDLETOWN -- Randy
Erwin, the yodeling voice of Alameda Slim in the Disney movie “Home on the
Range,” will be in Middletown on Saturday, Sept. 11, for an 11 a.m. appearance
at the American Legion Hall.

With a range of four octaves, Erwin's
voice is “something else.” Cammy Blackstone, writing in the San
Francisco Weekly, said, “That wild voice, sounding like a
combination of Tarzan, a trickling brook and Comanche war yell, will
knock your socks off.” David Zimmerman of USA Today said, “As
yodelers go, Erwin is tops.”
In his program, Erwin provides 45
minutes of cowboy music, folklore and history, plus rope tricks. The
audience will learn about the origins of the cowboy culture; how
cowboys lived, worked and spun their tall tales; about the animals
they worked with and the animals they fought against on a daily
basis; the physics of trick roping and how to do it yourself;
besides hearing and participating in music that has made the cowboy
a special part of American history.

After the show, refreshments of hot
dogs and Laura Bush's cowboy cookies will be served.
Erwin's appearance is sponsored by
Woody Jones, Bob Golden and the Knapp-Chesnut-Becker Historical
Society Inc. The event is free and handicapped-accessible.
Why not sing a song of sagebrush and
let out an Indian yell? You'll feel better!

Book note
One of the goals of the Knapp Library
is for adults and youth alike to enjoy poetry. A book related to the
program is “Cowboy Poetry: A Gathering,” a collection of poems
written by cowboys, revealing their sensitivity to language and
feelings. The book was published in 1985 by Peregrine Books, Salt
Lake City, Utah.
