Joe Haning appointed as new fire and police commissioner     Send a link to a friend

[SEPT. 23, 2004]  Mayor Beth Davis has appointed Joe Haning to the Fire and Police Commission. Haning takes the place of Nancy Amberg, who recently resigned.

Haning, a 36-year resident of Lincoln, was raised in Hopedale. In accepting the position he said he was honored to be asked. His father served on the Tazewell Board of Supervisors.

Haning taught two years of sixth grade and one year of fifth grade at Central School before moving to teach geography and history at Lincoln Junior High. He was also athletic director and coached track before his retirement from the junior high.

It was a full-circle moment that brought many chuckles as Haning was called forward to be administered the oath of office by one of his past students. The former sixth-grade student, now city attorney, Bill Bates commented, "I don't have a paddle," and was clearly moved as he swore in his former grade school teacher.

Haning pronounced, "He was a model student," as he returned to his seat.
