[APRIL 9, 2005]  ELKHART -- Outings on Elkhart Hill are planned for the last three Saturdays in April. Participants are required to make reservations for the walks.

Wildflowers

Join botanist Bill McClain and the Elkhart Historical Society for a Saturday walk through the incredible spring wildflowers of Elkhart Hill. Two walks are planned, April 16 and 23, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Meet at the Bluestem Bakery in downtown Elkhart at 9:30 a.m.

Dress for the weather and use tick spray.

Reservations are required. Call (217) 947-2238. The cost is $5.

Birding

The Elkhart Historical Society invites you to join ornithologist Vernon Kleen and other birding enthusiasts on April 30 for two special outings on Elkhart Hill, at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The morning session will meet at Miss Jessie's Gallery at 7:30 a.m. and leave for the hill promptly at 8 to catch the majority of songbirds. Return to the village will be at 11 a.m.

The afternoon session will meet at Miss Jessie's Gallery at 12:45 p.m. and depart at 1 p.m., returning to the village at 4 p.m.

Participants will take their cars to the departure point but then be on foot. Please be sure to use tick repellent on your legs, dress for the weather, and bring your binoculars and whatever essentials you will need.

The cost is $5 per person and reservations are required. The group size will be limited to 25. Please call (217) 947-2238 for reservations, and leave your name, number in your party and a phone contact.

Elkhart is at Exit 115 from Interstate 55, 20 miles north of Springfield.
