Logan County Habitat for Humanity to break ground for No. 9          Send a link to a friend

[AUG. 4, 2005]  A Habitat of Humanity groundbreaking will be at 1305 Lincoln Ave. on Monday at 7 p.m. Jim and Rita Everson and family are the recipients of this Habitat house, the ninth for Logan County.

Families must put in 500 hours of sweat equity. They may work on other houses, preferably before their own. The Everson family has done this. They also must put $500 down before moving in. After this initial down payment they make house payments to the local Habitat for Humanity to pay back their interest-free loan. The program is a "hand up" not a "handout."

Immediately after the groundbreaking ceremony, those who wish may go to the dedication of Habitat for Humanity's new warehouse, at 700 N. Kickapoo St. in Lincoln.

Most of the building material for the warehouse came from the Genesis Ministries Project (at the former Bartmann's Nursing Home). A section of roof from the former nursing home had been damaged by high winds, and the salvage material was given to Habitat for Humanity. Strikers from Myers Industries disassembled the damaged section and then helped to erect the warehouse with the same material.

Dawn Ferguson and family have been selected for house No. 10.
