44-year-old bicyclist loses life in nighttime accident

[AUG. 8, 2005]  A 44-year-old Elkhart man, Jeffrey Ehrich, was struck and killed at approximately 10:25 p.m. on Sunday evening. He was traveling on a bicycle in the right-hand lane of Old Route 66 southbound between the Salt Creek bridge and the prison exit.

A vehicle driver, Anthony M. Whitacre, 18, of Lincoln was traveling with passenger Justin R. Whitacre, 16, of Lincoln in a red and grey 1990 Chevrolet Suburban in the right lane. The Suburban struck the bicycle, causing the rider to be ejected from the bicycle.

Ehrich was pronounced dead at the scene by the Logan County coroner's office.

Logan County Sheriff's Department, Logan County Paramedic Association and Lincoln Rural Fire Department responded to the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by Illinois State Police.
