HAVANA -- The Polka Pace Race on Sept. 10 will
be the 23rd annual race through the streets of Havana in conjunction
with the annual Oktoberfest. This year's 5K has been moved an hour
earlier, with the starting gun to go off at 8 a.m. The 3.1-mile
route includes a pass through Riverfront Park along the Illinois
River, a pleasant jaunt through residential surroundings and a final
stretch down one of Havana's most beautiful brick streets.

The Polka Pace Race is one of the many activities happening in
Havana for the 32nd annual Oktoberfest, which is always the weekend
after Labor Day. This year's celebration will be Sept. 9 and 10.
Race packets and sign-ups are available starting at 6:30 a.m. at the
old gym by New Central School, at the corner of Pearl and Market
streets. Walkers will line up behind the runners and all will take
off at 8 a.m. All walkers receive participation ribbons, and
trophies are awarded to top finishing runners in various age groups.

Fun runs in advance of the race will be on the three preceding
Wednesdays. These runs start at 6:30 p.m. at the New Central Gym,
and there will not be any traffic control. For information, contact

The Oktoberfest weekend will be filled with traditional
activities, including a parade Friday night, German bands, arts and
crafts, the Polka Pace Race, Big M Amusements carnival, and of
course, bratwurst, sauerkraut, beer, wine and other tasty German
specialties.
