Price gouging?          Send a link to a friend

Note from the editor about fuel tax rates, costs and profit:

Last week the wholesale cost of gasoline was $1.86 per gallon. With taxes, fees and transportation added, the cost to the vendor was $2.29 per gallon. The price at the pump was $2.59. While we do not have the current wholesale prices, we all know that they have jumped since then.

Some comparative figures for gasoline and LP:

  • $.19 per gallon state tax
  • $.18.4 per gallon federal tax
  • $.007 underground storage tank fee
  • $.003 environmental impact fee
  • $.38 per gallon taxes and fees

Add:

  • $.05 per gallon transportation cost

Equals:

  • $.43 per gallon taxes, fees and transportation

43 cents per gallon taxes and transportation cost
30 cents per gallon profit

[to top of second column]

To the editor:

Can someone say price gouging? Lincoln seems to always mess with the price of fuel when something happens. Price here in Alabama has not changed a bit. Still $2.39 a gallon. It's a shame the oil companies still take advantage of people even when they are making a killing already.
