IDOT gives motorists a break during the holiday season          Send a link to a friend

[DEC. 20, 2005]  SPRINGFIELD -- The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Monday that highway construction work will be suspended wherever possible to ease traffic congestion and make holiday travel easier for Illinois motorists during the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

In the greater Chicago area, all lanes on the Edens, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Stevenson, Dan Ryan and Bishop Ford expressways, as well as interstates 80 and 57, will be open.

Various construction zones will be open for Christmas from 3 p.m. Friday through midnight Sunday. For New Year's, zones will be open from 3 p.m. Dec. 29 until midnight Jan. 1.

However, due to the nature of some projects, there will be construction zones throughout the state that will continue to operate. The Illinois Department of Transportation is urging motorists to slow down and drive with caution through these zones. Holiday travelers are reminded that work zone speed limits are still in effect.

Motorists are advised to check www.illinoisroads.info for information regarding winter road conditions and updates on road construction. Interstate road condition information is also available by calling 1 (800) 452-IDOT [4368].
