[FEB. 24, 2005]  Looking for all-day fun, food and a great auction with dancing and music to cap it?

Answer: You can arrive for breakfast at the Knights of Columbus at 7 a.m. this Saturday for breakfast and stay all day. Breakfast will be served till noon and then lunch starts.

And what's better than an IGA pork chop?

Answer: Maybe a chop and a good game of euchre? A euchre tournament starts at 1 p.m.

You can submit silent auction bids on many valuable treasures and packages up to 4 p.m., when winners will be announced.

At 6 p.m. there will be a rally of local union groups.

Then what?

Answer: You may as well stick around or run out and bring back some friends, because at 8 p.m. music and dancing starts up. Music will be by Country Thunder.

Come one, come all. The event is open to the public anytime, all day Saturday.

What is behind all this hoopla?

Friends are helping out friends. Carpenters union Local 644 plant employees of Myers Industries have been out of work for 4½ months following failed contract negotiations. The striking employees are not eligible for unemployment compensation, and many with families are feeling the pinch.

Local 644 spokesman Mike Fak said that as of Tuesday the pool is at $26,000. The 50-50 drawing is at $6,000.

Although hesitant to give an estimate on the final fund-drive balance, Fak said he thought that there could be another $10,000 or more come in. There are more unions still to respond and some unions yet to turn in tickets. There are other organizations that have up to Saturday to turn in funds.

The multitiered fund-raiser, beginning this week, will end with the all-day affair Saturday at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Organizers have planned the pancake, sausage and biscuit breakfast in the morning, as well as the evening of music with the band Country Thunder supplying the entertainment. Donations will be accepted at the door for the music portion of the day's events.

Tickets for the 50-50 drawing and tickets for the breakfast are available in advance at $5 each. Special benefactor tickets are available at $50 each.

Dick Logan's Kerr McGee, the Knights of Columbus Hall, Mitchell-Newhouse Lumber Co. and Logan County Rental Center are selling tickets. You can also call Glenn Shanle at 732-3207 for ticket information.
