2:59 a.m. Wednesday update

[JAN. 5, 2005]  Low pressure over north central Texas this morning (Wednesday) is forecast to track northeast toward the Ohio River by this evening. This storm system will bring a wide variety of wintry weather to central Illinois through this evening. Increasing northeast winds will bring colder temps into the area and combine with moisture associated with the storm to produce rain, freezing rain and snow.

The precipitation should gradually change from rain to freezing rain in the Peoria area between 4 and 6 a.m. and in the Bloomington area by sunrise.  Ice accumulations will likely reach around a quarter of an inch before the precipitation changes to snow by sunset. Several inches of snow will fall on top of the ice before the precipitation ends from the west Wednesday evening.

An area south of a Rushville-to-Bloomington line and north of a Winchester-to-Danville line will see a transition from rain to freezing rain and finally to a brief period of snow during the afternoon and evening on Wednesday. In this area, the combination of less than a quarter of an inch of ice accumulation and snow will likely produce hazardous driving and walking conditions.

For the counties of Cass, Champaign, DeWitt, Logan, Macon, Menard, Morgan, Piatt, Sangamon, Scott and Vermilion, including the cities of Champaign, Danville, Decatur, Jacksonville, Lincoln and Springfield:

A winter weather advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. until midnight Wednesday.

Rain will continue across the area through the morning hours. As cold air slowly moves south into the area, the rain is expected to change over to freezing rain this afternoon and then briefly to snow this evening before the precipitation ends. Ice accumulations of less than a quarter of an inch will combine with light accumulations of snow to produce hazardous driving conditions later today and through this evening.

A winter weather advisory is normally issued for a variety of winter weather conditions, such as light snow, blowing snow, sleet, freezing rain and extreme wind chills. While the weather will be significant, the word “advisory” implies that severe winter weather is not anticipated. However, if you are planning on traveling north along and north of Interstate 74, periods of freezing rain will make for very slick roadways today.

Rain and freezing rain will change over to all freezing rain this morning as colder air in the low levels of the atmosphere edges its way southward into central Illinois. The freezing rain is expected to change over to snow this afternoon before ending during the evening. Ice accumulations of around a quarter of an inch along with snow accumulations of several inches will be likely by this evening.

A winter storm warning is issued when severe winter weather is expected to occur. Heavy snow and ice are forecast to accumulate in the affected areas, causing hazardous driving conditions. Life Sentence, No Parole

If we tried to invent the cruelest punishment for dogs, we probably couldn't come up with anything worse than "solitary confinement" on a chain or in a kennel.

Dogs are pack animals who crave the companionship of others.  Scratches behind the ears, games of fetch, or even just walks around the block mean the world to them.  Curling up at your feet while you watch TV is their idea of heaven.

Many dogs left to fend for themselves at the end of a chain fall prey to attacks by other animals or cruel people, and many others are injured or hanged or choke as a result of getting entangled or caught in their tether.

If you have a backyard dog, please, bring him or her inside.  They don't want much--just you.
