7:43 a.m. Thursday update

[JAN. 6, 2005]  A flood warning is in effect until 2 p.m. Thursday for the following counties:

  • Champaign County in east central Illinois
  • Douglas County in east central Illinois
  • Macon County in central Illinois
  • Menard County in central Illinois
  • Edgar County in east central Illinois
  • Moultrie County in central Illinois
  • Piatt County in central Illinois
  • Sangamon County in central Illinois
  • DeWitt County in central Illinois
  • Logan County in central Illinois
  • Vermilion County in east central Illinois

The excessive rainfall over central Illinois over the past several days was producing flooding across the warned area. Rainfall over the past 24 hours averaged from three-quarters of an inch to locally 2 inches over the warned area. This fell over an area that had already received moderate to heavy rainfall earlier in the week.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, country roads, as well as farmland along the banks of creeks and streams.

A flood warning means flooding is occurring or is imminent. Most flood-related deaths occur in automobiles. Do not attempt to cross water-covered bridges, dips or low water crossings.

To report flooding, have your local ESDA or the nearest law enforcement agency relay your report to the National Weather Service.
