Alexander, Redbirds another 'Illinois' team on the rise

By Jeff Mayfield          Send a link to a friend

[JAN. 26, 2005]  NORMAL -- Gregg Alexander had another great all-around game last night as he and the senior contingent led ISU to a 77-58 victory at home. The game was much closer than the final score indicated, but the Redbirds are making their mark whether their fans will take the ride with them or not.

Last night's contest drew only 5,709 patrons to see a team capture its 14th win! I heard excuses like so many people stayed home to watch "another" game on TV. Have fans not heard of TiVo? DVD recorders? Or a recent invention called VCRs?

Well, with or without the "faithful," ISU is putting together a very nice season of its own. And Lincoln's Gregg Alexander is a big reason for the success. Game after game he shows up and makes Lincoln proud by his approach and just simply by the way he plays the game. He plays it the right way and lets it come to him.

Tuesday night was another fine example. Alexander hit for 11 points on only five shots and pulled down a game-high seven rebounds… all this from a 6-foot-4 guard from Lincoln who is going in among the giant sequoias to snatch those rebounds. Its guts, grit and determination, and I'm glad that those are the banners he waves while representing our community.

The Redbirds now find themselves all alone in third place in the league, with a chance to move into a tie for second within the next week. Their overall record is now 14-5 with a Missouri Valley mark of 6-3.

Not bad for a team predicted to come in last place. Too bad the predictors didn't ask Gregg his opinion before they put their names on their predictions!

ISU will face its sternest test of the season on the road Saturday versus league leader Wichita State.
