[JULY 5, 2005]  Lincoln firefighters were on the move this holiday weekend, but the main events weren't related to fireworks as might be expected this dry year.

Mark Miller, Lincoln Fire Department assistant chief, reported that on Saturday a wedding was disrupted when candles caught some decorations on fire during a ceremony at St. John United Church on Seventh Street. Pastor Robert Henderson sustained second-degree burns to his hands while trying to save some of the church relics. The church cross caught fire and burned.

An attendant also sustained injuries during that ceremony when she fell off a step.

Also, early in the afternoon on Saturday, a car caught fire on Woodlawn Road. A couple from Decatur heard a backfire from under the hood of their Cadillac Seville. They pulled over, and there was smoke coming from under the hood. The fire was well under way by the time firefighters got to the scene, and the vehicle was a total loss.

On Sunday a home at 1626 Rutledge sustained $7,500 damage in a late afternoon fire. Lincoln Rural Fire Department and all off-duty officers were called out to assist.

A candle was the cause.

Alarms that were activated at Maple Ridge Care Centre and Lincoln Christian Church turned out to be false.

Windemere Estates had a dumpster fire.
